USA What title made you splurge on a new set-up?

Has anyone had a Blu-ray title they loved so much they felt their current TV/player wasn't worthy?

Up until last year I had a 42" Samsung TV (the model just before Smart was introduced) that was only 720p/1080i resolution and an original PS3.

The release of The Little Mermaid (hardly groundbreaking cinema, I know, but my favourite animation) pushed me to update to a 40" Samsung Smart 3D TV and a 5.1 Blu-ray home theatre system. I've never looked back.

I bought my HDTV and my first Blu-ray player a couple of weeks after Skyfall was released in theaters and when the 50th Anniversary James Bond 007 Blu-rays were being released.

Default Origin Story

Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc was the first Blu I ever bought.

The bass response (boom, crackle... booomm, crackle-crackle) revealed that my 30-year-old, dried-out speaker cones had actual holes in them, and I began building my 5.1 system...

I don't think a specific title (or group of titles) has ever prompted a hardware upgrade.

Although things like Prometheus, Skyfall, ST:ITD (and even crap like Oblivion, actually) keep bumping up my interest in returning to projectorville.

Soon...

(oh yeah, and 3D is a good point that's worth mentioning. The stellar 2D visuals of Prometheus and ST:ITD alone provide a nice nudge toward a projector but I got the 3D versions of both (the ST:ITD Replica Phaser edition was worth every penny...it's a very cool phaser. 3D is sort of nibbling around the edges of my current flirtations with a new projector)

2 titles, actually... Prometheus and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I bought the 3D versions during Black Friday of 2012. I bought them without even owning a 3DTV because I was planning on getting one eventually. I actually didn't get a 3DTV until a year after that. I didn't get a 3DTV until Black Friday of 2013. I got a 50" Vizio 3DTV from Best Buy that was normally selling for $799.99 at the time. I got it for $599.99. Since then, I bought quite a handful of 3D titles, so I have plenty to watch.

My #1 want for Black Friday 2014: A PS4!

Godzilla (2014) coming soon drove me to buy a new tv to replace my Vizio that crapped out 'bout seven months ago. Haven't been able to watch films in 5.1, since any monitor/tv I already had would be to small for the seating arrangements.

Was gonna wait 'till my family's financial situation was a bit breezier, but the want for dat roar and my local Best Buy accidentally putting a forty inch Insignia TV under the price of their thirty two inch made it a quick decision. Definitely not the best tv, but for less than two hundred bucks it's already way better than a Plasma Vizio I used for almost eight years, let alone the lifeless husk that's been there this year.

TRON: Legacy. I was determined to get a proper 3D display at a good price because of that title and I did.

Noah and a few other titles with dark scenes convinced me that I couldn't live with my Vizio's backlighting problem any more. Everything looks blue at night and I.cant see much of what's going on. This problem has been building up for a while. Ordered myself a 60' Samsung. Can't wait until that gets delivered!

The Walking Dead finally helped me decide to get a new 5.1 system. I was always planning on getting a new 5.1 set up but after watching the Walking Dead on it I finally upgraded and am so glad I did.

It's 2 inches smaller but is now a 3D smart TV that can do 1080p. Size isn't everything when it comes to TV's.

Now he has 3D, 1080p and a smart TV which is an upgrade from a non 3D 1080i TV.

To each their own I guess. The only upgrade I see is the 1080i to 1080p. IMHO, 3D is going extinct and Smart TV is unnecessary since everyone has smartphones and are connected to the internet 24/7 anyway.

Not sure how 3D is going extinct. Even if it was there are hundreds of 3D movies available which qualifies the purchase and upgrade for many.
A smart phone has nothing to do with a smart tv. He can access netflix or YouTube etc on his TV now instead of watching on a tiny screen.
You're just being arrogant.

As for me, I upgraded to 3D after My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009) finally came out on bluray in polarized 3D in 2012. Though I had been considering it beforehand, it gave me the final push.

The blu-ray of Gravity (3D) pushed me to buy a new tv and blu-ray player. Larger screen + 3D were the most important factors.

For me it was around 3 years ago because I wanted to watch movies in 3D. I got a standalone 3D blu-ray player just for playing the discs. Now I just need a 3D tv and I'll be set.

The Blu-ray release that will finally make me upgrade to a real HT setup is going to be THE ABYSS. Since there's no release in sight I guess my 720p 50 inch Panny plasma will suffice. In the meantime, If I see a reasonably-priced 60 incher (or higher) I'll go for it. My living situation up until 2 years ago didn't permit me to have a full-blown theater setup. Right now I'm looking to brush up on current technology to see what I need before buying anything. Currently in the market for a good soundbar to replace the typically crappy audio from the TV speakers, until I get a new receiver. I wish I had the money for one of those curved screen HDTVs.

Seeing Tron Legacy started the 3D bug. Seeing Prometheus in 3D (specifically the scene where David discovers the star map) sealed the deal. I went from a 46" display to a 3D capable projector with a 119" screen.
