There's an open letter circulating on Facebook that I love regarding the Teachers strike in B.C., Canada.
It's nsfw so if you don't like f-bombs, don't read it. Enjoy: [Show spoiler]

I usually like your opinions, but not this time Jett. No big deal Bro. edit: I don't want this to get political. I put it in the humour section for a reason, it's funny. Last edited by Scarriere; 09-01-2014 at 04:40 PM. Reason: added to it |

Its hilarious but its true. Instead of opening prisons with tax dollars how about educate children so they don't end up in jail. Why waste money funding test for second and third graders to determine how many cots they need in prison in the future. They would rather spend money to determine how many prisons they need in the future instead of helping children in the here and now!!!
I work for one of the largest school districts in the country. I'm a man of many hats. But I'm not a teacher. I work in Information Services/ Technology. I'm a server engineer. On occasion I teach teachers how to use their work stations, or help integrate technology into the curriculum. I see what teachers go through. Its a viscous cycle that no one wants to truly acknowledge. Peeps and the Gov't want to blame teachers....But in all actuality teachers have a persons child 8hrs a day. Where are the other 16hrs spent? A child should arrive at school prepared to learn but alas many do not. I have various family members and friends in various aspects of education. In the past my mother was a teacher, a social worker, a dean, a principal. She opened a day care center and was co director. Regardless of the school or her role in education. My mother used to buy stuff for students all the time. Deodorant, pens, paper notebooks even clothes for the younger kids who need a change of clothes yet their parents do not or simply can not provide for them. All education begins at home. Ethics, values, morals are taught at home. children having children. Children raising children because they have no guidance at home. Single parents who wk 9-12 hr days to keep a roof over their kids head sometimes can't come home from wk and parent their kids. I could go on and on. But if you told parents parents that all education begins at home and they should step up and stop blaming everyone else but them for their kids behavior they would revolt. Its a viscous cycle and no one seems interested in stopping it. |

We live in a "blameless" society, where your poor life decisions become everyone else's mess to clean up. It's really quite simple to fix this: -If you're on welfare or can't support yourself, don't have a kid. -If you're single, don't have a kid. -If you're under 18, don't have a kid. -If you're a drug addict, alcoholic or belong to a gang, don't have a kid. -If you're prone to violence, jail or have the mental capacity of a garden snail, don't have a kid. Just because you can't keep your legs closed or your pecker in your pants, doesn't mean you absolve yourself from personal responsibility. Responsibility, both financially and morally, begins at home and we've created generational poverty by making it easy to walk away from it. |

In the past I made the following suggestions installing solar panels, recruit cellular companies to install cell towers. When Cell phone companies install towers they usually pay for maintenance and upkeep of the roof since they don't want anything to impact their towers, I suggested renting parking lots after school so people in the community can park. The response I received was that the school district is not in the business of making money we are a non profit organization. HUH WTF SMDMFH I recently purchased a house and have no children. Now I'm truly feeling the sting of paying education taxes etc. Where does the money go? I don't have a clue..... I have to pay into my medical benefits. Have not had a cost of living increase in Lord knows how long. To add insult to injury I took a 10% pay cut. Again Where does the money go? Quote:
Children are not pets you can't take em back to the pound if its to troublesome. Peeps shouldn't have em if they don't want to take care of them and or think they are any ones responsibility but their own. |

You don't use planes, so we shouldn't fund the FAA and flight controlers either? You're not retired, so F* retirement and Medicare? You're working, so F* Social nets? You're healthy so F* Health Insurance? You drive really well so F* drivers Insurance. You only drive off roads so F* public funding of bridges, roads and infrastructures? You drink your own well water and live in the countryside with no pollution nearby so F* the EPA. You don't plan to go to space so F* NASA... etc. Also, you're not involved in a war so F* the army, and F* publicly funded weapons companies too right? That's swell... And a seriously misguided position to say the least. ![]() |

Real change needs to start in the home before school. Parents influence > teacher influence. Kids could go through hell at home, and going to school where a teacher has to spend most of the time teaching (not counseling) is not going to make up for the hell at home. Kids could have a wonderful home life, and a mediocre education, but still have the motivation to pursue all the knowledge and experience life has to offer anyway.
I agree a better education helps, but I think the majority of delinquents had shitty home lives. That guy is just trying to sound like a bad ass more than he is trying to affect change anyway. |

Did go you to private school for your education (all of it)? Did you go to college? If you did, how was your college education funded?

Myself, and my sons, deal with the lack of good education with the generation coming up - even though my kids are grown, and on their own. I'm a senior manager, at a computer firm. I have a real shortage of truly educated engineers, that can handle both technology, and simple written communications. They're out there - but the numbers are shrinking. My sons are military officers. They have a shortage of well educated recruits - that can handle the increasing technical and logistical needs of active-duty military service. They have strong teams - but it's harder to get new people who know what they're doing, or can learn new things. It's really strange to them, as they did quite well in school, and (after searching around) went to excellent public schools, and finally to West Point. But those numbers are shrinking, too, as teachers get paid a pittance for going through four or five years of education just to get a teaching credential. The best of them often go elsewhere for work, due to the low pay. Something's got to give, at some point. I don't have kids in public schools, and see a real need to pay good teachers a good wage. It's good for everyone, even if they don't have kids at home. |
