i have a 200$ sony system from a few years ago looking to upgrade full time student so not alot of $$ but any way what do you guys think of this?

I'd suggest that you go into a big-box store, and listen to this setup.

Crackinz has a budget Polk-setup he recommends.

Onkyo TX-SR605 ($390)

Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System ($250)

you can substitute other cheaper AVRs too.
