Carlotta Films U.S. has officially announced and detailed its upcoming Blu-ray release of director Charles Lane's Sidewalk Stories (1989). Recently restored in 2K, the film will be available for purchase on Blu-ray on October 8th.

A young artist living in New York, on the fringes of the financial district and its rushing crowds, tries to make a living sketching passersby on the street. He survives on meager pay and finds refuge in an abandoned building. One night, in a back alley, he finds a little girl whose father has just been murdered. While struggling to take care of her, he meets a young rich woman who immediately falls in love with this awkward duo…

Twenty years before The Artist, Sidewalk Stories portrayed the friendship of a tramp and a child, in a moving and funny homage to Chaplin's The Kid. Both witty and tender, Charles Lane's gorgeous black and white comedy pays tribute to the silent film era and captures the daily life of the homeless population of New York with a cinéma vérité approach reminiscent of Lionel Rogosin's On the Bowery, Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing, and John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood. Available for the first time on Blu-ray in a stunning new 2K digital restoration!

I've just watched this and the transfer is beautiful. There are some quirks that appear to be part of the original photography but on the transfer side, to my eyes, it is flawless.
