United Kingdom Superior/exclusive titles from Japan/South Korea?

Hey,

I am not sure if this is the right forum (sure hope it is...) but I'm heading to Seoul and Tokyo next month and just wondering what titles I should be looking out for?

I'm into most films and anime. I haven't actually watched a new anime in ages, but I think most don't come with English dubs over there?

Anyway, any recommendations appreciated!

3 Japanese Sony titles spring to mind as possibilities:

Equilibrium
Danny the Dog
Trainspotting

This is true but the Japanese has a much higher bitrate so that *may* mean it looks better on bigger screens. Plus if the OP is going to Japan no shipping charges which he might otherwise incur form NL.

10 Blu-ray and 30 DVD Chaplin Box set. Sells for about $100. Same transfers as Criterion and Masters of Cinema on the blu-rays.

Yeah, I've got a 50inch screen so the higher bitrate the better. Also, I'll save on shipping charges but I'm almost positive films are more expensive in Japan.

I have the following films in Japanese BD editions, as they have not been released on BD elsewhere:

The Sheltering Sky (Bertolucci)
The Straight Story (Lynch)
Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (Polonsky)

All these are excellent transfers.

Edit: The Sheltering Sky has been released in France (under a different title), but it may have forced French subtitles.

Isn't Japan the only country that have Equilibrium in the extended version/DC?

I second The Straight Story, excellent disc. Japan also has quite a few Woody Allen titles not yet available in the US or UK.

No, you are thinking of the same director's (Kurt Wimmer) other film ULTRAVIOLET, where the Japanese blu-ray is the only one to have the Unrated Extended Edition of the film.

MokaBear, I assume you have a region free blu-ray player? Looks like you are in the UK (Region B), so remember that Japan and South Korea are Region A (although some discs may be Region Free).

Indeed, I'd be looking at region free discs, however, I may pick up a blu-ray player from over there, which is why I didn't make any specifications. Thanks for pointing that out though!

Is Ultraviolet actually any good?

Hmmm. I like it (guilty pleasure) but most people hate it.

It is visually stunning. I would advise a rental first.

I like Ultraviolet too, it's not a deep film by any means but it's enjoyable enough

I like it, but as SymbioticFunction says; a rental is probably advised.
If you do buy it, I strongly recommend the Extended Edition. We saw it in the theater first time and thought it was OK, then bought the EE DVD and decided I never needed to see the Theatrical Edition again...

Welll...that's 3 people that like Ultraviolet.

Personally I'm happy enough with the theatrical cut on blu-ray (I previously owned the longer cut on dvd) but can see why the Japanese version would be sought after.

I think it's quite amusing that this site's review only gave the film 1/5 but the reviewer admitted that he watched it four times.

Like I said, it's a visually stunning film. That alone should make folks cut it some slack.
