My receiver expands stereo sources (like TV or some DVDs) to 5.0 surround just fine and each of my speakers is just fine. Everything's fine.
However, when I play MP3s (or AACs etc) they just get played in stereo for some reason. I have it hooked up via HDMI and none of the enhanced surround options on my receiver Dolby Pro Logic II etc. does anything. It seems like the PS3 when outputing MP3s is outputing them in 7.1 LPCM with 2 channels containing music and the rest just silent. Anyway, is this normal? Anyway around it? Is there a firmware update coming to allow us to enjoy expanding MP3s to surround audio? Please help. ty |

It worked fine on my old receiver using an optical cable. I may just have to hook up the optical cable and switch back and forth when I change from playing a BD to MP3.

Do you have it hooked up with HDMI (for the audio, that is) or something else? (I have a similar option on my receiver but it still doesn't work ... again it works fine for everyting else, including stereo DVDs on the PS3)

Are you using HDMI to output audio or some other kind of cable? I can get it to work with other kinds of cable, just not with HDMI. When using HDMI and playing MP3s the PS3 seems to want to output at 7.1 LPCM @48khz no matter what. So, my receiver can't do any "all channel stereo" or any other kind of expansion or duplication of stereo because it's not being received from the PS3 as stereo but rather as 7 channels, albeit 5 of them silent. Again my receiver has all the options yours does. And these options work just fine when playing the MP3s from my PC.

Also, might be worth checking your PS3 settings in the audio bit, make sure that you have the 5.1 options ticked. |

Again for other stereo sources on the PS3, it expands to surround just fine. And for stereo sources coming from my PC (also being output in PCM), it expands to surround just fine. It's only when doing MP3s on the PS3 that there's a problem. When you say HDMI, you mean you use HDMI for the audio right, not merely for the video? Just making sure. ![]() |

Well, it looks like we're stuck
http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...ead.id=2890979 We can only hope for a firmware update. In the meantime, I'll be acquiring another optical cable and just switching to optical audio output when playing non-BD/non-DVD music/video files. |

it doesn't let me do it. When I have it hooked up with HDMI and select HDMI audio output on the PS3, it automatically checks various lower sample frequency (44.1 and 48) for 2, 5 and 7 channel audio ... the only thing I can change is checking or unchecking the options for 96 frequency or 192 frequency and the like. These auto-checked options are greyed out.

I hope there is a work-around for this. I was planning on getting the Onkyo 606 or 805 - I currently listen to all my music (mp3's on the hard-drive or steaming) and always listen to my music in surround - using optical.
I plan on going through HDMI for my video and audio and that would suck if my music can only be played in stereo. I hope this isn't true and there is a way around this one. ![]() |

I think I'll just buy another optical cable. Doesn't take too long to switch audio output in the PS3. |
