Default Heath Ledger... (posthumously) Oscar-bound

Urgent from Sam -- Heath Ledger in 'The Dark Knight.'
10:27 PM June 26, 2008

I just returned from a screening and I wanted to commit this to a public forum as quickly as possible. Heath Ledger gives a blockbuster performance in the new Batman movie. His work, as The Joker, will absolutely be nominated for an Oscar, and at this point in the year, Ledger is also a hands-down favorite to win it posthumously. Ledger offers perfect pitch, perfect tone, his Joker hits all the right notes. 'The Dark Knight' is among the better super-hero movies of all time, and Ledger is THE BEST villain in a super hero movie of all time. Really. It will only add to the conversation of all that Ledger could have accomplished had he lived. Amazing work.

1. he wont even be nominated, no comic book has had an actor/actress nominated for an Oscar since 1990 when Jack won for Joker, and Jack Nicholson is a little bit more known and better than Heath Ledger.

2. I will be seeing this tomorrow in an advanced screening , so i'll give real impressions tomorrow night

3. Post this in the Movies thead

I did not like Jack's Joker. He was not the Joker in the comics. It seems to me from the trailers, of course I need to see it, that Heath is playing the Joker from The Joker graphic novel. The nut case before, during, and after his swim in chemicals.

Oh and read the comments on that page..Very true comments

"I haven't seen the film (can't wait, though), but until I do, I'll be skeptical on these claims. It's a textbook case of posthumous rose-colored glasses--the same phenomenon that has elevated John Kennedy to "great president" status."
Quote:
"As expected people will now blow his joker out of proportion. There are critics out there comparing this to Godfather II, how ridiculous. The same people probably loved Epic movie."
Quote:
"Its amazing how spectacular a celebrity becomes if they die young. We've all seen it with James Dean and again with River Phoenix and then Kurt Cobain. They were all good actors and/or muscians but their deaths magnify their talents. If Ledger were still alive, people would not be pushing him for the Oscar in this role."

Quote:
"I've seen a pre-screening of the movie, and while it is an amazing follow-up to the first Bale Batman movie, and Ledger gives a fantastic, scary, full-on-nutcase, brilliant performance....I only see an Oscar if Hollywood wants to comfirm what we already know. They're media *****s who would only be doing it for publicity. It's a great role, but not career-defining."

Dream about what. You got a man crush? The guy isnt a good actor. Give the writers and the makeup artists the Oscar for making him look good. There are plenty of actors in hollywood that could read that script and make it believeable.

I also heard that its not even his laugh and hes not shown on camera when the laugh is heard.

You don't win Oscars for this stuff. Albeit he may be awesome but if he hadn't of died people wouldn't be overhyping it to hell. I know people want him to get something for playing a role that over exhausted him and was a factor for his tragic demise, but the academy nominates who it will. And until we see all the performances until December 31st, and unless your part of the academy your assumptions have no merit. Its very unlikely.

Not to mention its the October/November small name movies that are nominated.

If Johnny Depp died last year, people would have been nominating not only for Sweeney Todd, but for Jack Sparrow too

Agree 110% I hate being harsh on the subject because people jump down your throat even though they haven't seen the film. If he wasn't dead it would be just another blockbuster. But people have gone crazy saying its the most amazing thing ever just because the guy OD'd. I didn't know he was the guy in the patriot until he died. Im not saying he'll do a bad job, im just saying its another blockbuster like they have every friggin summer.

I liked the hype of the movie until he died. It went from "Best movie in the summer 2008" which is fine, ok believable, to "This is the best movie ever" even though they havent seen it yet, after he died.

Come on, its not George Clooney that died, its Heath Ledger. The guy took it up the ass for money (kidding, it was a good movie and im not queer) but they are saying he stole alot from Nicholson acting wise in this movie. If he cant trust himself to do a great job in the movie, then why did he sign on just to steal someones style.

Again (just kidding) Ben Stiller could have been the Joker and made it believable.

Yeah people are acting like this guy was in the league of Pacino, De Niro, Day Lewis etc. I mean he made casanova for god sake. Why wasn't he watched closely in that? Why wasn't that film hyped? Why didn't that movie make crazy money? I know Because he wasn't ****in dead! Plus its batman which has tons of fans young and old. Many very loyal. The first movie that was hyped in his career was Brokeback, and not because of him but because of the subject matter and constant jokes. I love batman but people are being ridiculous with the oscars, and greatest actor ever, greatest performance ever, greatest movie ever, prom king, nobel prize, math award hype.

Peter Travers a well respected top critic also thinks Ledgers performance is oscar worthy .. And to say he is anything like Nicholsons Joker is ludacris, They can't be more different c'mon now thats right in your face evident just from the trailers even. Anyways here is the rolling stone review

George clooney played batman...And the movie sucked
Heath ledger will play joker...Even if he didnt die the movie would and will be better...and he will pull off the joker with ease.
He put alot of focus on his role in the movie.
I dont know why...But i feel like maybe he got too involved in his role
But good actors they change the way they are and do stuff sometimes to fit into the character of the movie..This joker seems alot darker...and how someone would really be crazy...be at the same time..he came off as smart and a leader...The imax preview scene shows that.

Clooney is a ok actor IMO and ledger was never anything in my book...But even without dying i felt like his part as the joker would make him a stand out actor in movies to come.
And i dont think his death will bring more people to the movies than the amount that was already going due to seeing the previews....When i watch this movie i am not going to think hey this guy is dead...I'm going to say wow this is a Great movie....Which we all know will be....it has the right formula...And will be probably the best batman movie.
I liked batman begins alot..So i am ready to see this!!!

"Most reviews before films come out are by promotion dept when they think film might be stinker"

10,000 BC had great reviews a month before it came out. Then the Promo viewings dwindled and led to real reviewers seeing it and saw it for what it was.

Same thing with Spiderman 3, Shrek the Third, Beowulf (which wasnt bad, but not deserving of hype) and Cloverfield. Just to name a few

And Clooney is an ok actor? If thats the case, then Heath is literally a nobody. Yeah his Batman movies sucked, but thats not on him, its the script. Like I said, any good actor in hollywood could pick up the Joker script and make it great when it has a great script. Christopher Nolan is the one who is making Ledger so great with the script. And the makeup which everyone raves about, is not done by him, its done by the makeup artists, which my wife who works as a beautician in NYC said its a total botchjob. And shes a huge Batman fan (who knew) and knows his neck and arms should not be his skin color

Christopher Nolan himself in various interviews has expressed how Heath owned the role and blew him away with his joker performance. I don't get how you can call a guy who has already recieved an oscar nod for best actor a nobody.

No no no. He didnt earn that Nomination or Oscar. It was the movie and the controversy.

How can you think anyone other than Jack Nicholson playing the Joker will win an oscar for a Comic Book movie. Do not compare him to anyone more than a 4th or 5th tier actor
