I've always had fond memories of the Austin Powers movies. Recently I re-watched the first two films and... wow, the humor in those movies definitely haven't aged well. They weren't nearly as funny as they were when I last saw them 15 years ago.
What other popular movies from the 1990s haven't aged well? |

Any movie that depends on "cutting edge" technology is doomed to date poorly...as much as I still like Scream, a lot of its initial impact lay in the then-novel concept of "portable" phones you could carry around with you and how comparatively rare that was to have one, even though they look GIGANTIC by today's standards and, in an era where EVERYONE has a cell phone, it's no longer a good "hook" for a horror Maguffin.

Without Scream, Joss Whedon would still be only a script doctor. It's amazing how much of his style is lifted from Kevin Williamson (and personally, I always felt Whedon worked best in teams as others could easily point out his weaknesses and keep his self-indulgentness to a minimum).
Here's one that I just watched that hasn't held well: The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. I liked this as a kid but today, it's a really obnoxious movie due to the casting of Andrew Dice Clay (I got the idea this was a role intended for Bruce Willis but he was busy getting the similar Hudson Hawk off the ground, I also think the role would have worked better with John Travolta or Kurt Russell). Also, the hair metal and West Coast rap elements date it. |

And movies that rely on cutting edge technology can age well provided they don't use the technology as a crutch or a replacement for solid storytelling. Some of the best heist movies ever made pit the protagonist(s) against 'sophisticated' alarm systems that seem laughable a decade or two later but films like Die Hard or Thief or Rififi have held up very well. Dr Strangelove, Fail-Safe and War Games relied on both technology and Cold War fears but all three have aged extremely well. And some people might bristle at this one but 2001 was very grounded in what was at the time cutting edge technology. Yes it was science fiction but it wasn't fantastic. Hal's AI was the only real leap. Everything else was more or less off the shelf and it still works today. |

I began reading the initial posts in this thread and I was coming on to defend "Scream" (As one in a long line of brilliant generational horror films that generate new interest in the genre..."Psycho", "Halloween", "Scream"... etc...), but I see the last few posts have already done so... and "2001: A Space Odyssey" has also been mentioned favorably...
Ladies and gentlemen ...my work here is done... ![]() |
