United Kingdom The Missing

Anybody watch this last night? I half expected it to be yet another depressing look at the way the press handle the disappearance of a child, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The time jumps worked and I like the mystery element they've put in, which seems different from the usual 'who dunnits'. No annoying melodramatic music or slow-mo screeching, which was a definite plus. It felt very realistic. James Nesbitt was very impressive as the father - emotive without over-playing it.

I look forward to the next one.

All eight episodes of the BBC miniseries starring James Nesbitt and Frances O'Connor. When Tony and Emily Hughes (Nesbitt and O'Connor) travel to France with their five-year-old son Oliver (Oliver Hunt), their family holiday turns into a nightmare when Oliver disappears into the crowd of a busy French street. As the frantic father loses patience with the police and their lack of motivation to search for Oliver, Tony takes matters into his own hands and begins to form a private investigation. The cast also includes Tchéky Karyo and Anastasia Hille.

The Missing Renewed for Season 2

Quote:
Less than a week after it received a Golden Globes nod for Best Miniseries, The Missing has secured an order for another season at Starz.

The network announced the news Tuesday, adding that the second installment of the gripping crime drama would — True Detective fashion — follow new characters involved in a new case in a different location.
BBC One also has renewed the series, our sister site Deadline reports.

The British drama’s current season follows the sudden disappearance of a 5-year-old boy who goes missing while on vacation with his parents, played by James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor. O’Connor also received a Globes nomination for the role.

Season 1 unfolds over two timelines: one immediately following the disappearance and one years later. Starz says Season 2 will use the same storytelling framework.

Harry and Jack Williams, who penned Season 1, will return to write Season 2.

I threw in the towel after four episodes. I've seen too many British shows very similar to this over the last few years, no doubt inspired by the success of the Scandinavian whodnnits. The fact that this is about a missing child rather than a dead one still didn't make that very original.

I can't recommend this show enough. Very gripping, very powerful stuff. Fantastic, tight, writing. Very well acted. The way each episode plays out reminded me, a lot, of Breaking Bad.
Have two young children of our own, the wife & I were paralyzed with fear watching this show. Can't wait for S2.

That's exactly how I felt about it. I have just got around to watching Happy Valley with The always excellent Sarah Lancashire. Imo, easilly the best drama on tv last year. I was hoping for the same high standards with this one but it fell short I feel.

I'm the opposite: I thought Happy Valley was alright, but very overrated. It didn't offer anything new for me.

There are a lot of dramas about missing/dead children, but this one seemed to me to be the most unnerving and realistic one. Ian Garrett was one of the most menacing villains I've seen on TV for quite some time.

Interesting. I think I just invested more in Sarah Lancashire's character. She always seems to produce the goods.

Going to check out next series of broadchurch as that was another high quality show. I enjoyed the first series. I rate Olivia Coleman very highly.

However, the tv show I can't wait to see this year is Shane Meadow's 'This Is England 90' but I am off topic now so will leave it there!

Hi rickah88, just now got around to finishing this & all I can say is WOW!!! No bonus content though.

This really pulls at your heart-strings. The lead actor James Nesbitt as Tony Hughes & actress Frances O'Connor(she is Mrs. Selfridge in the series Mr. Selfridge another fav of mine!) as Emily Hughes were amazing, as was the supporting cast.

Was Tony's & Emily's son Oliver lost, kidnapped, trafficked, murdered? This is the journey you will find out when you watch this gripping & emotional series. Find out how far a family will go to get to the truth about their beloved son!!

On my most Highly Recommended list!!!

Oh thank you for the feedback! Sounds like a pretty soild purchase. That's a shame about no extras. I'd love a commentary or some crew discussions.
I will add this to my list and look for a good deal on it!
The wife and I are so stoked for S2. Can't wait.

I have absolutely no idea when I'll next be able to continue on with it, but I will do! One day!

Smile BBC announces cast and plot lines for season two of The Missing

Quote:
The Williams brothers’ hit kidnap drama, The Missing, was a huge hit for BBC1 when it first appeared in 2014, and since then we’ve known that this will be anthology series, with each subsequent story featuring new characters and a new, horrifying tale. Today the BBC announced not only a top-name cast but also plot lines for series two, which has begun filming. This means that this second series may well be with us this year. Read on for the details…

Tchéky Karyo will reprise his role as detective Julien Baptiste as The Missing returns with a new case, new characters and a new location. The series follows Sam and Gemma, played by David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes, whose daughter Alice went missing in 2003. In 2014, a young British woman stumbles through the streets of her German hometown and collapses. Her name is Alice Webster, played by newcomer Abigail Hardingham (Nina Forever), and she has been missing for 11 years. Alice’s return sends shockwaves through the small community. Told in dual timelines, flitting between 2014 and the present day, we follow Alice’s family as they are thrown back into a turmoil that threatens to tear them apart at the seams. When French missing person’s detective Julien Baptiste races across Europe to pursue a 12-year-old case that he never let die, we begin to explore the murky morality and emotional complexity of what happens when the missing child you’ve been longing to return actually comes back.

Tchéky Karyo, David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes are joined by Roger Allam; Laura Fraser; Anastasia Hille; Lia Williams; Abigail Hardingham; Jake Davies; Florian Bartholomäi; and Daniel Ezra.

Harry and Jack Williams, writers (Two Brothers Pictures), said: “While we were writing the first series, we began talking about what the show would have been had Oliver Hughes been found. This story grew out of that discussion. It’s the other side of the coin to series one – an exploration of loss, of freedom, of how the past can shape the present in myriad ways that we cannot fully understand. It’s bigger, more ambitious, and we’re delighted to have such a brilliantly talented cast joining Julien Baptiste for a new case.”

David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes (and Roger Allam and Laura Fraser)? Yes, I think we can cope with that.

Series 2 premieres Wednesday 12 October:

Quote:
Ep 1/8
Wednesday 12 October
9.00pm-10.00pm
BBC ONE

It’s late 2014 and a young British woman stumbles through the streets of Eckhausen in Germany and collapses. Her name is Alice Webster - and she was abducted from the same town 11 years ago.

Her return sends shock waves through the tight-knit local community, as her family are thrown into turmoil. As the search for the abductor gathers pace, Alice also appears to hold vital clues to the whereabouts of a second missing girl, Sophie Giroux, whose disappearance was investigated back in 2003 by French detective Julien Baptiste.

In present day, Alice’s parents Sam and Gemma are barely speaking, whilst Alice’s brother, Matthew, has become violent and withdrawn. Meanwhile Julien is in Iraq, following a clue that he believes is key to finding the person who abducted the girls.

Alice Webster is played by Abigail Hardingham, Julien Baptiste by Tchéky Karyo, Sam Webster by David Morrissey, Gemma Webster by Keeley Hawes and Matthew Webster by Jake Davies.

Ep 2/8
Day and time to be confirmed
BBC ONE

After Alice returns to her family home, the Websters struggle to deal with the trauma she has suffered.

As Matthew is faced with an unbearable request, Gemma’s suspicions about what happened to her daughter begin to grow. The Royal Military Police (RMP) and the German police agree to share jurisdiction over the case and launch a manhunt for the second missing girl. During a search of the disused bunker Alice escaped from, Julien discovers a key clue that points the investigation towards a local suspect.

In 2016, war journalist Stefan Andersson is helping Julien make his way to Azwya, across an active war zone. What is Julien doing out in Iraq? And will he make it home unscathed? Meanwhile, back in Eckhausen, Gemma and Sam continue to drift apart, while RMP Staff Sergeant Eve Stone has to deal with her father.
