Default Sony Update Question

When you update firmware, do you just use the newest version, or do you need the previous version that was released before too? I'm having trouble updating my Sony BDP-S470. I tried to do it yesterday with the newest version, but it never finished. It started and then stopped.

Still haven't been able to watch DOFP

The latest firmware will contain all previous firmware releases.

Are you installing the new firmware via downloaded file or via network connection to Sony servers?

Through a downloaded file. On the Sony site, they have both 2011 and 2013 updates. I just did the 2013. When it updates, it was suppose to go through steps 0-9. I only got to step 1 or 2. I called the customer service, but they couldn't figure it out either and said to look around on their website.

Did you receive an error message? If so, what was the message or error code. Did you download the correct version? There appears to be two versions of the firmware for each release; a M03.R.xxx and a M04.R.xxx version.

If you have trouble with downloading. You can pay around $6 to have them send you a disc. You can also try connecting on the wire.

No error code, it actually started running normally, just didn't go through the whole process. Looked like the player shut itself off. I got the M03 version because that was the one for my system. The weird thing is when I check my current firmware version, it says M04 (it used to say M03), so it started to install. I tried doing the same upgrade again, but now it doesn't start upgrading at all.

I might do that. Still might have a problem because the system thinks it has been upgraded. The player says it's running the newer M04 version.

Thanks everyone for all the help!

It sounds like the upgrade may have installed. What is the full firmware version? i.e. the numbers were the x's are (M04.R.xxx)

I think the numbers were M04.R.491 which suggests it did install, but the instructions says its suppose to take 30 mins and read "FINISH." When I did it, it stopped after about two minutes and didn't say finish or anything.

I tried playing DOFP again, but it still can't play.

That's more of a disclaimer, it could take up to 30 minutes but rarely ever does. Usually the firmware is updated within a few minutes. What happened after the two minutes?

According to Sony you can proceed by installing this firmware (M04.R.788) which adds 3D capability and improves BD-ROM capability:

M04.R.491

Quote:
11.Check the current firmware version to confirm that the upgrade has successfully installed.
Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 491, the firmware upgrade was successful.
IMPORTANT: To add support for 3D content, first confirm that the firmware has been upgraded to version M04.R.491 and then upgrade the firmware to version M04.R.788. Please click here to download and install the M04.R.788 firmware upgrade.
M04.R.788

Note: The Sony page isn't very clear but notice the M04.R.491 firmware is from 2010. It appears the previous firmware converted your firmware from M03 to M04 which would allow you to install future M04 firmware updates. Now that you're on the M04 firmware you can upgrade to the newest version of firmware, M04.R.788, from 2013.
