This came to me today, because I was thinking of watching E.T. which is my favourite film of all time, but then I thought that I've watched it 2 years now in a row, and probably won't again now, because I don't want that thing I feel when I see it to go away or the power of it diminish.
Do you feel that way too about certain movies that you love dearly? Do you try to avoid watching them multiple times? I feel that way about absolute favourites from my childhood that I had watched multiple times. Fortunately I have some new favourites that I have watched once or twice, so i can watch them again if I like.. |

Depends on what mood I'm in, or if I'm wanting to watch a particular genre, director's work, etc.. I'd say usually I don't watch the same movie more than once every couple years. Raging Bull is one of my favorites, I may get in the mood to watch it soon since I haven't watched it in a year, I might watch it and then a few months later if I get on a Scorsese kick I might watch it again.

I find myself rewatching favorites every 1, 2, or 5 years or so. It's pretty frequent, but I do feel that if I watch something too many times in a row, it starts to lose its meaning or feeling. I find I can get burned out on Star Wars and LOTR pretty fast, probably because I have seen them to death throughout my life, so I tend to give those more time in between viewings. There have been times where I found them dull or they felt like they dragged, but after a long stretch of not seeing them and forgetting how they are, they feel fresh and new again. This also means that some movies I love that I don't see as frequently - like Silence of the Lambs - always feel fresh, because I never really got burned out on them in the first place.

I watch Jaws about 3-5 times a year. there are even times if i dont have a ton of time to watch a full movie i'll start Jaws at the scene when they are leaving in Quint's boat.
one of my other faves... Conan the Barbarian (1982 of course) i watch 2-3 times a year too. but that one i will sit through the entire thing every single time. such a great score. love it. |

Though i do watch Home Alone 1 & 2 every year these last couple of years, and I can't think of a Christmas without watching Home Alone. Maybe in holiday films the fear of the feeling being lost is not the same? I don't know.. |

Yeah I get what you mean. Two of my favourites are The Fountain and Phoebe In Wonderland. I've seen The Fountain... 4 times? and Phoebe 5 I think.
Not bad considering they're newer movies but I'm not big on re-watching for a number of reasons. 1. After I've seen it a few times it's pretty much with me. Not that I have a great memory, because I don't, but the spirit or message of the movie is at least well remembered. 2. There is so much stuff I haven't seen. My curiosity for unseen films and shows is just about endless. Added to that, a lot of movies I became a big fan of aren't ones I could have predicted. Finding hidden gems, being able to appreciate movies that other's might not, it's a nice experience. I like to keep seeing what else that is out there I might love. |
