![]() ![]() Darker than Night 3D Blu-ray ![]() There should be an announcement soon of a 3-D blu-ray release of this atmospheric Mexican horror film. I thoroughly enjoyed it, myself. Would everyone please keep their eyes peeled? Last edited by Deciazulado; 01-12-2017 at 01:03 AM. |

Sadly there's no English friendly version on blu ray, but subtitles can be downloaded from the internet, as can a SBS or OU (side-by-side or over-under) version of the movie...

Quite unfortunate, my further research has determined that is pretty much my only course of action. Although, I need to figure out a way to burn it to BD-r with the subtitles so I can play it on my projector, otherwise my 3D monitor will have to suffice for enjoying this cliched genre flick.

There is an American DVD with English subtitles I bought on amazon. But there's no 3-D bluray with English subs, which is a shame.
As for the cliches, yes, the film is a cliche, but it's done with such impeccable style and atmosphere, and with such an appreciation for the genre, that I don't mind. In fact, I have put the stamp of approval on the cliches, so you may buy it without doubt that the cliches are put to good use. The film is an exercise in style, from the wallpaper to the hair. I can't agree with all the negative reviews. I realize that the subtext of most Mexican films don't communicate with English speaking audiences. We don't see in them what Mexicans see in them. But I'm always halfway there to start with. People have lower expectations and higher praise for Lucio Fulci's films, and this one is no worse than the totality of his. The performance by the housekeeper -- I keep forgetting the actress's name -- is so well-modulated the film is worth watching just for her. Last edited by Richard--W; 06-27-2018 at 12:37 AM. |

![]() Given that there are no subtitles other than German, there wouldn't be a point to region locking the disc other than to make it more difficult for Spanish-speakers in Region A to watch the film - you wonder what planet these distributors think they are on. It reminds me of All Stars, a UK 3D film that got a censored 3D blu ray in France, Germany and Holland but an uncut 2D-only release in the UK. |

Yeah, it is a pain that there's no English friendly 3D release which has made me resort to other means. I got a 3D mkv file and found English subtitles online but my efforts with merging the two have not worked out. It's an over/under file and the subs show up at the bottom and the middle of the screen when displaying in 3D haha. I'm sure I'll figure it out when I have time, just haven't bothered in awhile to work out the kinks.

So after spending yesterday afternoon messing with the files I had and making about 6 or so BD-r coasters, I finally got it to work out. I fixed the double subtitle locations pretty quickly when I learned there was a program made for creating 3D subtitles that also converts existing files. Part of the issue before was playing it off my computer which viewed it as an exterior sub file though.
I thought that might be enough but when I burned it to disc, turns out it only showed up in the right eye and not the left. I almost gave up and thought I'd stick with that but the eyestrain was enough that I would never make it through. Eventually figured that out that problem as well, I needed to basically hardcode the subtitles in both the over-under portion. Once that was done, it was finally coming together... But once again I made more coasters, since when I muxed the subtitles into the video, it changed the size and location of the subtitles, they were so huge and located at the very bottom of the screen, almost getting cut off when more than 2 lines were shown. At this point I learned I didn't need to actually burn the file to check it out beforehand haha, finally got the size and position to be decent enough to watch. So after about 6 hours and $10 worth of BD-r's, I finally got a subtitled version of Más Negro Que La Noche. The subtitle track is pretty bad at times haha, I think it pretty much went through Google Translate but it's enough to follow what's going on. Could I have corrected some of the lines, sure, but I spent enough time on it that I didn't want to go reading through the entire thing to try and correct what I think they might be saying, not knowing Spanish I'd probably make it worse haha. Would have been so much better if they just had made an English friendly version somewhere in the world, I would definitely buy it if that was available. I watched a few minutes of it to test it out and the 3D is actually quite good, nice layering and even noticed a fun pop out moment in the short time I watched. I know bootlegging is frowned upon on this site but considering there's no other way for most of us to watch it in 3D, PM me and I can send a dropbox link for the files with instructions. |

Saw this last night. I was very surprised by the 3D! It has one of the strongest 3D layerings I have ever seen in any movie. Depths achieved were amazing. Great pop-outs too.
Unfortunately the movie was so overlong and uninteresting that I had to fast-forward most of it. |

Would any of you guys who are tech savvy enough and have the necessary equipment equipment consider selling a copy to people like me for the cost of the disc, labor and shipping.
There is only one copy left on Amazon DE that won’t ship to the US so I had to order from eBay but still won’t be able to understand it. ![]() |

Having skimmed through Sword of Granada Darker than Night makes a fun bookend for Mexican 3d cinema.
After subsisting on a diet of bog standard Disney conversions it’s a pleasure to see genuine 3d. You can see the film is built around the technology with plenty of bannisters, chandeliers and bed posts placed in the extreme foreground for some pleasing parallax. The production values are high and there’s great depth throughout for selling the corridors with some Resident Evil style camera angles. I’d hoped for more in the way of pop-out scares but the effects are all very subtle - which probably works to the films favour. It’s all corner of the eye, shadow figures, blink and you’ll miss it movements. The CGI work done on the painting was a real standout. Dr Who-style. The film is a melange of tired haunted house tropes but it’s always beautiful to look at. It could have done with losing 2, 3 (or 10) scenes of the women being spooked out by sounds in various rooms but I can’t say I was ever outright bored. I had to delay the dvd subs by 17500 milliseconds to sync. Recommended. |
