99.99% of movies filmed before about the mid fifties will have black bars at the sides.

Any film done in CinemaScope or Panavision or 70mm or Technirama will have black bars above and below. Most Super-35 films (most are made for 2.39 presentation) will have bars above and below also.

What I do is check Leonard Maltin's guide and see if the post mid fifties film says "CinemaScope" or "Super-35" etc. If it doesn't it probably will be "full screen" on a 16:9

You can of course check specs or imdb or other sources too.
