Default Why widescreen movies show margins even on HDTVs?

I am a novice and a very basic question. I thought that with a HDTV set to 16:9, any widescreen movie (on bluray) will occupy the entire diaplay. But no. All widescreen movies still show margins on top and bottom (I have Samsung LN52A750 and Sony BDP-S300).

What am i missing? And if this is how it issupposed to be, then am I not wasting money by buying a larger screen TV if the movies are not going to use all of it?

Thank you.

Bobby
