The biggest "poison pills" in the whole PT were a lack of surprise (most knew where it was going), and too much reliance on CGI. There was some rushed writing too, but Lucas openly accepted blame for getting carried away.

No he didn't. Mace beat him in the saber fight and had him on the ropes. When Anakin got there he then was able to twist it to his favor with Skywalkers help. but Mace had beaten him first.

OMG..he let Mace put him on the ropes. He could have killed Mace anytime he wanted! I can't even believe I am having to type this.

You thought Palpatine really needed help?

I just have to get this off my chest after watching the latest trailer again for what must be the 10th time. I still get a lump in my throat at the last scene. You know why i well up every time i see the shot of Han and Chew? Because after the absolute shit that George Lucas dragged us through, with those horrendous prequels, with all the horrible changes to the Original films. At last there is hope, hope that Star Wars will be good again, that'll make you feel like when you were a kid and were blown away every time you saw a Star Wars film. And the way Han deliverers that line, it makes you feel like he feels the same way and his words are full of warmth and happiness that they're back to making great Star Wars again.

You think he was planning on getting his face burned off, stigma he would carry all the way to his death?

He made a calculated gamble which eventually paid off, but at great cost.

No, Palpatine did not man handle Mace. He could have died during that fight.

Wrong! Palp could have killed him ANYTIME he wanted. The only Jedi he couldn't have killed without working for it was Yoda.

I am confident that is exactly the reaction the filmmakers were going for when they designed that moment. It very much breaks the fourth wall. Han might not be looking directly at the audience when he says, "We're home," but that line is very much meant as a direct address to the audience. Star Wars is not only back in the theatres where it is "meant" to be, but Star Wars is home in terms of its Original Trilogy self. That being said, as a fan of the entire saga I feel really alienated by this marketing approach, despite the fact I think it looks like a good movie. It's like the filmmakers are saying: "that Prequel stuff wasn't real Star Wars, and as a fan of the Prequel Trilogy you aren't a real Star Wars fan. This movie isn't meant for you. Move along." "We're home" feels like a very exclusive invitation to an event I should feel welcome at.

Not that I really care since Episode III is a piece of crap, but Palpatine was beaten. He lost his lightsaber and was pinned against the wall. Sure, he may have sensed Anakin was coming, but unless the dark side is so powerful that it allowed him to foresee that Mace would try to strike him down and Anakin would stop him by severing his hand and knocking his lightsaber away, then he simply lost that duel and then convinced Anakin to bail his ass out.

Say what you want about Episode III, there are some goldmine quotable moments from that film like the best of the Star Wars films. That being one of them.

It's a credit to the scene that all these years later it's still hotly debated!

Not to mention Palpatine juuuust happened to lose his saber seconds before Skywalker walked into the room and managed look as helpless as possible to confuse an already conflicted Anakin? He knew Anakin was on his way, he could sense Anakin was in trouble on Mustafar. I don't think a few miles of city would change that.

I wonder if Kylo Ren will have Force lightning capability...

Either way it works spectacularly well, at least with me and all those who have felt their franchise has been destroyed. We might not agree, but the Prequel stuff wasn't real Star Wars and never will be, it was a joke, a travesty and i don't care if it's cannon or not.

Padmé: Hold me, like you did by the lake on Naboo; so long ago when there was nothing but our love. No politics, no plotting, no war.
