Anyway, pertaining to 4:2:0, somebody should email that info (“The visual discernment of 4:2:0 sampling, when the pixels get that small and have that much range, will be really hard to see. 4K UHD TVs are very sophisticated when it comes to filling in that gap, as it were") to a *video guru* named Joe....and his followers that posted that *geek* podcast on this forum.

If we get it in the UK before Christmas I will be absolutely amazed.

I was more concerned regarding the comments about players not featuring Dual HDMI outputs. Not having an AV Receiver which is capable of passing the signal to my TV, I was going to do what I did in the days of 3D Blu-ray and output the Video Signal to the TV through one HDMI output and the Audio Signal through the other and direct to my Marantz Receiver.



If the UHD BD Players do not have Dual HDMI for this purpose, I am not sure how I will get the Lossless Sound from the Discs and may have to fork out for a new AVR.

I agree with you there blu ray's first came out in 2006 in the uk so 4k blu ray might hit in 2016

A second HDMI out is a MUST. That may be where the first differentiation comes in with the UHD BD hardware, e.g. players with two HDMIs and cheaper decks with just one. If they don't do any with two, then that's sealed the deal for me: I'm definitely not buying into UHD video just to have lossy audio along with it, because I'm not gonna upgrade my amp along with what will be an expensive player.

Sony are seemingly aware of this though as they put dual HDMI outs on their FMP 4K players, hopefully their UHD BD deck will follow suit.

I don't think their prices are that bad as it is (for the 103D) given their great support, quality of product and options on the unit, but I'm in the U.S. Maybe they are higher in the UK.

As long as Oppo offers non Darbee editions, without the "D", (BDP-113, 115). I don't want to pay an additional $100+ for an option I'll never use. I noticed a while ago that the BDP-105 has now been replaced by the BDP-105D but still at the higher price.

I kinda doubt that, HH. For the price they'll be asking I'll be able to pick up a player and an amp, bearing in mind that my default position isn't to spend thousands on a single piece of gear that isn't the TV. The prices are indeed better for hardware in the US though (not just for Oppo but pretty much everything). Even when factoring in postage & customs charges it's still a couple of quid cheaper to import an Oppo than buying it locally.

I bought an Oppo 103 and am happy with it.

What is more of a concern is if I have to buy blu rays that are only 1080p whilst waiting to upgrade my player. I would prefer it if 4k disc options were made available from the outset and then I could watch them in 4K when I get the player. I do have a PS4 so maybe thats enough.

I would be surprised if more than 20% of 4k buyers don't have a receiver 5.1 setup. So losing any technical gains via sheer stupidity on the behalf of the manufacturers is just madness.

In my case, the bigger issue is waiting for the cost of a UHD projector that meets my budget maintaining at least the contrast of my JVC. I am probably at least two years away from seeing that. I really do like my receiver though and I just got it last year. I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon either.

I guess the BDA decided that it would be a good idea to have a limit of 1000 nits for the peak brightness. While I think that HDR has a lot of potential I do wonder how SMPTE 2084 will work with different viewing environments since it was designed to use absolute brightness values (10 nits is displayed at 10 nits, 100 nits is displayed at 100 nits, 1000 nits is displayed at 1000 nits, etc...). The problem is that the viewing environment might be a lot darker or a lot brighter than what was used when the video was made. I am curious to see if Ultra HD Blu-ray will have any method of changing the brightness of HDR video in order to match the viewing environment.

That should be simple to do and hopefully one of the CE companies will decide to release a Ultra HD Blu-ray player with two HDMI outputs.

I just got a 4K TV today and it absolutely ruined 1080p bluray for me.

I dont know about other people, but I have an artist's eye, and to me the difference between 4K and 1080p is night and day. Honestly I think the difference is nearly as huge as DVD to bluray. Its like after experiencing bluray for the first time and not being able to stomach DVD anymore.

So theres a big problem. 4K blus dont come until next year. I dont know if I can stand the wait. Because going back to 1080p is like going back to DVD after bluray. Painful to say the least.

Honestly, I'm almost regreting the purchase a bit. Its like the biggest tease. Like driving a Ferrari and the speed limit is 25 everywhere.
