Very good choice. I've had the s3200 for a while and haven't had a single worry. No problem updating the firmware with the Sony's either.

From the Mulholland Drive thread to this CC thread, so many posts about the "blur"...maybe it should be its own board so people can discuss even further. Perhaps in the Wish List category.

If I ever have the money I'm gonna have one of those high end OPPO region-free blu-ray players someday. Just need $500 or however much they run these days. I think the model BDP-103 one is what I'm thinking.

Anyone here have an OPPO ?

it is an "open and shut" topic, so I'm not sure why there is even discussion about it.

Apparently people on the internet like to complain about things.

I have checked them, but I really fail to see what is so great about them, they have some extra options for Audio, but I just use HDMI to my AVR and I am perfectly happy with SQ and PQ.

There appears to be some kind of processing that supposedly enhances PQ on the newer models, it is called Darbee, but I am always doubtful of those kind of processing, then you have to spend more to make it region free.

I just use one of the <$100 Samsung smart Blu-ray players that are readily available at Target or Best Buy. The first one that I bought in 2012 wore out last year, so I replaced it at Target, and shelled out about $15 for a four-year protection plan.

When it comes to Blu-ray players, I sort of like the idea of having something "disposable" so that it won't break the bank if I have to replace it.

As far as region capability, God knows that I spend enough money on Region A stuff. Besides, if I do upgrade to an Ultra HD Blu-ray Player at some point, then my region A discs will all be playable on it.

The only reason I wouldn't get a $50 player like my multiregion Seiki, is because they are noticeably slower, I miss my PS3, I am guessing the newer Sony Players that cost $100+ should fair better in that regard.

yes, I think people like to have a forum on which they can pretend to know more than people who actually do these type of things (restorations, reviews, etc.) for a living.

Yes, but it makes things more interesting for those of us that don't take ourselves or the enjoyment of watching movies too seriously.

Honestly, it amazes me that everyone can tell so much difference in transfers. I lump things into bad, good and amazing. Beyond that I'm leaving it to the experts.

This weekend I watched Robinson Crusoe on Mars and enjoyed the PQ for an old sci fi with cheesy landscapes. What we're seeing on Criterion is no doubt better than anything people have ever seen in their home. Good enough for me...

[Show spoiler]
I got the previous model BDP-93 with a region free kit. It's worked like a charm since I bought it in 2011. Never encountered a disc it wouldn't play.

As I understand, there really isn't that much difference between players when it comes to the playback of BD's. What sets them apart is how well they do DVD's, and this is where the Oppo's excel. They are really top of the game, outside of investing in a stand-alone high-end video processor.

The only thing I recommend with region free players is to have the ability to convert PAL to NTSC so you can view all of the special features.

Gee, that's great. Let him look at CC's Solaris, Thin Red Line and Heaven's Gate and have him get back to me. I'm happy to provide him timings where the picture quality is noticeably problematic WHILE IN PLAY.
