Thank you for letting me know. I just made a purchase on eBay for $17.95 ($14.95 + $3.00 shipping.) Only one more left.

Have it, love it. But there are, if I'm not mistaken, three cuts of the film. The longest one (on the CC DVD) not on Blu anywhere.

Oh...and I was so busy stoking out about the release of Gilda that I failed to mention that I'm also in for The American Friend and Lady Snowblood.

I just checked the specs. The Digital Element blu-ray is listed at 184 minutes, while the Criterion DVD is listed at 185 minutes.

I think that I could live without the extra minute.

Fortunately, you bought the right one. There's also another release in Russia with a different cover, which apparently has no subtitles and is region locked:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Andre...Blu-ray/40619/

Just a heads up. The first one, the one with English subtitles that you bought might be OOP.

Criterion lists the double features as "box sets" on their site, but I suppose it's a matter of personal opinion. It's imprecise, but it works for me.

The Gates of Heaven/Vernon, Fl, The Shooting & Ride in the Whirlwind, and the Grey Gardens reissue would count as terrific "recent" box sets, too.

The extra films included on some releases sort of toe the line, too.

Got my discs in earlier this week and just finished watching Dressed to Kill from that order.

The film looks amazing. Criterion still amazes me with their level of quality and dedication to to film. Dressed sounds great as well. I was a little worried about how it would sound, but again, it sounded great. The movie itself is still a great work, and for me it holds up. There are moments you can tell when it was made, but more because of the settings and surroundings.

Watching the interviews now and completely enjoying them. Good stuff in the de Palma interview and the Nancy Allen one is quite good. Great disc and well worth the money. Thanks Criterion!!

From the back of the CC DVD case:

Tarantino is pretty great. Kill Bill is swill. Sorry if that ruins your easy reduction.

Not from me. Kill Bill is great, Inglourious Basterds might be perfect, and Pulp Fiction is an all-timer.

I didn't think of it like what you guys said. Also, did not know of the box set thing.
I wonder if they will have the packaging be like the Samurai Trilogy, the keep case with 3 movies on 2 discs. In Lady Snowblood's case, both on one disc. Hopefully there is enough space on the disc to have great looking films.

I can post many more if you wish. I don't want to bad mouth Criterion. They were my film school and we wouldn't have many classic films in their best shape in home media without them, but they need to put in effort into their encodes. These Arrow transfers were from the same scan that Criterion has but better encoded. Arrow proves that you can have both have many extras and still deliver in AV presentation.
I didn't realize how bad Thief looked. I've kept the film on my DVR for over a year as it's a favorite, but never got around to buying it. Now I'm glad I didn't get it from here.

Default Jan. Announcements

Kept telling myself I'd never go in for an Inside Llewyn Davis double dip. Now that I've seen the roster of extras, I concede that I'll be picking this up at some point.

Haven't seen any of the other titles, but I'm interested in all of them! Guess that makes it a great announcement month in my book.

Semi-Criterion related...

With Crimson Peak opening today, I have a theory about Del Toro. It seems like his English films are stripped of all his nuances and mystery (see Crimson peak) and something is not quite right about the dialogue and motivations.

So is something being lost in translation, or is he purposefully dumbing down his American films?

If Thief looks "bad," blu-ray has really spoiled us for choice.

Omg yes! go did feel pretty dumbed down and a lot of spoon feeding.

He should stick to non English speaking films tbh, those are his best imo.
