Compare the piss filter he uses all the time in Spectre to the stunning work of Deakins in Skyfall.

Didn't he work on Let The Right One In? That film looked stunning.

mike, to my knowledge no in-camera “piss filter” was utilized. so on the one hand, you disparage the more stylistic look of Spectre compared to Skyfall, a look which Sam Mendes (for Spectre) intended from the get-go (and for that matter is happy with the outcome) to give the imagery a more classic, romantic feeling compared to recent previous Bond efforts….and…,

on the other hand, at the same time, you abhor the truly realistic look of the HDR content which you’ve claimed to have seen either with your home TV or at some unnamed establishment.

other than your very personally *selective* choice of eye candy, the ironic, almost humorous thing about this whole discussion is, with your background, i can really see Hoyte actually sharing much of your sentiments in regards to the use of HDR for cinematic motion pictures….not to mention, he has unconditional devotion to film grain, ergo, the 4K DI workflow (rather than 2K) he advocates for.

for the moment, i’ll spare mike another reference to HDR, so....on to another ‘H’.

at this week’s SMPTE conference, there was a good presentation on HFR, although, as I recall, much of it i’d already heard at the last HPA in Feb. For the sake of those who didn’t attend that past conference in the desert.... http://hollywoodpostalliance.org/wp-...5_HPA_2015.pdf

but a heads-up to all our members hailing from Poland (aronm, etc.) as to a planned discussion on Nov.20 (I think in the Seminar Room of the 1st floor of the Opera Nova Congress Center) -

Join filmmakers in a discussion about their experiences using the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES). Hear how it helped them preserve the creative vision and maintain greater control over their on-set and DI looks. Learn how filmmakers integrated ACES into their workflows and how it sets the stage for handling the explosion of multiple distribution masters, including HDR (for mike ). Share your thoughts in an open and friendly discussion with the panel.....

Peter Simonite, cinematographer
Francesco Luigi Giardiello, Digital Imaging Supervisor/Digital Workflow Supervisor
Moderator: Steven Poster, ASC, National President, International Cinematographer’s Guild
Introduction: Michael Tronick, ACE Film Editor, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors
Hoyte was interviewed at a past CAMERAIMAGE film festival, (also note to aronm and our other membership from Poland, he studied cinematography at the Lodz Film School )

not in the same sense, Spectre went for a more retro, classic look as I previously mentioned

perhaps i worded that in an insensative fashion. what i meant was that talk is cheap and i think we all would have appreciated a more detailed response from you regarding your viewing experience, better yet, illustrative pics, a youtube clip of the viewing venue, just something more than what you offered to readers. hell, something like listing the firmware version in the TV you used, just so we can be sure you were actually getting HDR in the first place

I was a huge fan of the cinematography in Interstellar. I look forward to what Hoyte van Hoytema has cooked up for SPECTRE. We get a new Bond movie with a 4K scan and shot on anamorphic 35mm!

I am buying my 15/70 IMAX tickets today. Bond movies are always events for me. My first one in the theaters was Tomorrow Never Dies when I was in middle school. I was hooked after that, and I went back and watched all of the previous films and I haven't missed one in the theater since. SQUEEE!

e.g., optimally, something more meaty, like this…..

but, in your case, since you are an HDR skeptic , which is fair, offer us a more illustrative evidence-based rebuttal to the value of HDR than a simple twitter-like response…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post11450715

now that’s the spirit

and a little something for cutting-edge digital camera aficionados, due to the low light levels, the nighttime boat chase on the Thames was shot with the Alexa 65 because of its resolution

I will be going to SPECTRE on Tuesday, my local IMAX has installed a new IMAX Laser projector, I wouldn't mind seeing it in IMAX but my friend who I'm going with is a complete spoil sport on things like that. We will probably end up in my local cinema, granted it's cheaper but the sound sucks and if we are in the downstairs screen its flat seating not stadium.

Interstellar had a fair amount of handheld camera work and just got on my nerves (for me, handheld camera work also = CHEAP) so it did not make my buy list. I have a CIH scope screen (2.35:1, 133") and the switching from 1.85 to 2.40 several times was annoying.

It really does appear many recent movies and most of TV is targeting small screens with mostly handheld camera work. There some exceptions, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones (a little handheld) Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge, The Paradise, etc.

They've issued Spectre on 15/70?

Thanks for the heads up, saves a wasted rental.

Liked The English Patient, IIRC, Run Lola Run got ejected after several minutes.
