APRIL 2010. Theatrical Editions + DIGITAL COPY.
Blu-ray.com's news page on edition details I would never have believed it, but: According to the Digital Bits, it's true. I hope by then Warner will be smart enough to provide the titles in highest bit rate video and full HD audio with no extra DNR. Hopefully they'll also be the extended editions. I don't mind if the appendices aren't included as I'll keep my DVD sets, but if they are converted to Hi-def I'm good with that too ![]() While the graphic indicates coming soon, TheDigitalBits.com indicates that the titles are in fact coming in 2009. updated TheDigitalBits.com reports these are likely delayed until March 2010. Who cares what version they put out. Its LOTR on blu ray. Why hold out on that. They are like the most talked about anticipated blus ever. By the way digital bits said that their sources say all three should be released in 09. All I can say is Day One purchase.

I bet they'll f*** this rlease up now warners own new line. They prob just release the theatrical..if they do i'll just keep the dvd's as i dont want the regular theatrical cuts. I hope they lavish this with the quality it deserves with exemplary pic and audio. Lets hope so.

In a way, it feels inevitable that this will be double-dipped.
Jackson always said there are tons more extras -- including deleted scenes, which no release ever featured -- to be had for the LOTR movies, and also, the perfect time to double-dip LOTR would be with the release of The Hobbit movie, or movies, or whatever the heck they are turning that simple tale into. So yeah, Warner. Do your worst this first time around. Lossy audio, theatrical cuts, DNR, a direct BD-Live link to the relevant AVS thread in lieu of meaningful supplements. Make us pine for the quality of the good old New Line some more. Although I wouldn't mind to hear that line about the consistency of squirrel droppings from the EE in these releases. In a way, it would fit. (Not that I truly dislike Warner or anything, of course...) |

I haven't seen the theatrical...only the extended. So that's all I'll upgrade to. But I have a feeling we'll get killed with different editions. Espeically with the Hobbit in pre-production.

For instance, going from the theatrical release of Fellowship to The Two Towers, Frodo suddenly becomes a mind-reader or one heck of a lucky guesser in that he knows Gollum's real name. How does he know Gollum's name is Smeagol? It's from a scene in the extended edition of Fellowship but cut from the theatrical. |

But Denethor is still a drooling fool, even in the EE.
I'll wait for the cut that finally shows him possessed by Sauron through his own palantír. How hard was that to put in, PJ, really? But then this goes into the larger question of the post-FOTR Peter Jackson hubris, and by extension, New Line's, and people like Penton are vastly more qualified to talk about that. For me, the highest definition that LOTR can ever be available in is Tolkien's masterful book. End of story. |
