I was at Hastings for the midnight release and they were putting out the standard editions and they had the BB-8 cover as well which I thought was weird.

Extremely callous statement to make, considering 57% of TFA's theatrical take on opening day was for the 3D version which meant some people cared enough to part with extra money just to get the 3D experience.

Or they were just so desperate to see the movie ASAP that they bought tickets for whichever screening was available, 2D or not.

But I generally agree that 3D is not going away anytime soon. It may be less popular than it was five years ago but the format won't (and shouldn't) be abandoned on the home video front anytime soon. Especially with big movies like this.

And the clear winner for best artwork is............the Target exclusive
As to the supposed fragility of the packaging? Just handle with loving care.
No problem at all.

Theatrical 3D, yes.
Home 3D, not so much.
At least in the US.

So I'm going to pick up "the best exclusive" at BestBuy later but I saw pictures that stores have this BB-8 cardboard displays. How does one get or purchase these store displays? Do stores just throw them away after?

I stopped at Target on the way to work. I think I had decided to go for the standard version, but every copy they had (standard or exclusive) was in a coffin box. There was a single standard edition in spider wrap too. So I couldn't determine which ones had the trays versus which ones are stacked. So I left without buying it.

Mine thankfully don't anymore but there was about a two-year period around 2011 or so when they did.

That was an ingenious strategy to wait on releasing the 3D disc. Now Disney doesn't have to worry about early sales being cannibalised by people who split the sets and sell off just the 2D or 3D discs on eBay.

Sounds like my Walmart did it right. Had the huge display right at the front, a smaller BB-8 display in the electronics area, and on the usual new release end cap. Tons of regular and no shortage of exclusives. I went with the BB-8 slip, didn't realize it had the stacked case. For a moment, thought I was missing a disc.

Was at my local BB when it opened, and they had a ton of the steelbooks. Actually surprised the hell out of me!

Has it been confirmed if the subtitles for alien speech are burned in or not?

On the Saga discs, all alien subtitles are their own track so that you can turn them off and see the movie clean or have alternate languages replace the english alien subtitles.

Disney has been skipping their 3D releases in the US after Beauty and the Beast. The only exception were Little Mermaid and Marvel movies. UK/Europe, they have them, but not for Star Wars. I'm guessing they're preparing for a re-release (along with the 4K UHD) around December when Rogue One hits theaters or even before VIII hits theaters next year.

That's crap. First, almost every PREMIUM theater (the one with the bigger screen and better audio) FORCES you to watch in 3D, there is no other option except going to the smaller screen auditorium. Same goes for IMAX. It isn't like I had the option to go see it in IMAX without 3D. So saying that it was 3D that made people pay extra or even see it at all is completely bogus when there typically isn't even an option if you want a premium experience. Thankfully here in the Seattle area, we had options. And the best theater out here (and one of the best in the country) decided to go 2D only for EVERY showing as the overwhelming consensus from their customers at the theater and on their social media have begged for them to show 2D with only limited showings of 3D if any. And they were sold out of nearly every show during the entire run.

Metrics only work when people have a choice that doesn't artificially weigh in one direction. I don't know ANYONE locally (and we have a big AV enthusiast community out here with our own FB group) that prefers seeing 3D versions of anything unless their kids want it. Every time we get a big group of AV geeks for a movie night, they always want the 2D showing every time.
