Most 8 bit video is 16 to 235 (black to white) and computers are 0 to 255. So if you set the display to PC mode then you are likely to see an increase in noise or banding, it depends on how the levels are translated. Many source devices can be set to PC mode which means it will do the translation.

UHD BD can do 10 bit video, not sure about PC's, I believe some can do 16 bit with pro software.

This was by setting in Home > Setup > Player Settings > HDMI > Advanced Settings:
Colour Mode: YCbCr (Automatic)

Previously had it at YCbCr 4:4:4 which was forcing 8bit.

So far my findings with the player are (by pausing each movie on the UHD at same point as my Sony BdpS480 and switching HDMI inputs on my 79X900B):

Better colour, seems a lot more natural than my Blu-Ray's using same TV picture settings. Reds were more accurately red, and just more range, especially in green foliage.

Kingsman and Life of Pi - colour was different and within motion, detail is more perceptible, but when paused, detail barely seems different. SFX seem to stand out

Mad Max - more colour, detail only slightly better when still, but in motion, more perceptible. SFX seem to stand out

San Andreas - more colour range and more detail paused or not paused. Special effects look poor compared to real footage though.

I thought this seemed odd, how Kingsman and Life of Pi didn't seem to have much more detail. I know Sony up scaling is supposed to be good, but can't be THAT good. Then I checked out the digital intemperates and SFX were rendered at for these movies.

For all SFX is 2K which might be why they're "shown" up more.

San Andreas seems to be:
Shot at 3.8k
SFX 2k
DI 4K

Mad Max:
2.8k
2K
4K

Life of Pi and Kingsman
2.8k
2K
2K

So now I get why people are annoyed with the releases.

However, the colour and detail gain in motion is a big hit for me.

It's almost like the difference between 720p and 1080p on my 79 inch. But the colour enhances it more as does the detail gain in motion, which seems to give more depth.. Hard to describe, but the image feels more natural, rather than artificially enhanced (guess up scaling can only do so much).

I am however viewing this in my extremely bright living room on a sunny day. Perhaps tonight's viewing will further make the 4K look better.
Max and San were 2k DI as they were 3D Warner is all 2k

Weird, perhaps scenes I chose were digitally zoomed, as they have the 2.8 or 3.8 to play with.

Will try some different scenes.

Still don't understand why they'd bother just releasing essentially upscaled films.

Surely if it's been 2k at any point, the 4K info is lost?

The studios are hoping you'll notice the improvements with 10 bit (or 12 bit Dolby Vision when that becomes a thing) bit depth, better color reproduction, and greater contrast.

Once you see films that had 4k workflows throughout, then you'll end up with noticeably more detail too.

BBC Nature is working on a new full 4k Planet Earth 2 and hopefully that will be released on UHD Blu-ray. That would be stunning.
Filmed-for-large-format-theaters Baraka and Samsara are also being prepped for UHD Blu-ray besides a few IMAX films.

Definitely seeing the benefits of that. I guess I am also seeing better detail in motion as they've upscaled each frame instead of my TV computing the upscale as it plays. not quite the wow factor though.

Looking forward to Hateful Eight.

I might invest in some Sony releases as they seem to use 4K digital intermediates. Now I am looking at IMDb for that info.

Crimson: you're getting SDR BT.2020 output from the player into your 79X900B?

That's what the Panny is saying.

Think the panel is 8bit or 10bit though, although I know Sony does do stuff with expanded colour, but the HDMI ports are capable of 4:4:4 4K @up to 30hz at 12 bit.

Found I had to set the colour space to YCbCr automatic, 4:4:4 would always set it to 8but

Not seeing any distortion either. This is the link that shows the HDMI capabilities:
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/attach...3&d=1407690163

This review also mentions that the displays are capable of more than 709 - EDIT link is for 950B, but assume similar
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/xbr65...1407223857.htm

Obviously not getting the full benefit, but guess I am getting MORE than usual. Wonder if the Panny is taking the displays capabilities into account.

Concussion I believe was shot digitally. A couple of the reviews for it noted the 2k di and while they say it looks good, its not as good as some of the true 4k movies.

Universal won't have its 1st uhd movie out til oblivion in September.

I rechecked the info, it was actually the 5th wave I meant to say, which has been added to sonys new ultra site. But both pride and Prejudice and 5th wave are distributed by sony pictures but sony isn't listed as a producer for either.

So perhaps movies produced by sony will all be 4k (but not the ones produced by other companies and distrubuted by sony) but the only way to know if a Sony uhd bd was produced by sony is to actually look it up.

Thanks mate. I know all that other stuff but what intrigues me is that the player is outputting BT.2020. Yes, the Sony 4K TVs have a wider colour space than 709 (I measured my 55X9005B at about 90% of P3) and support xvYCC inputs but that's different from having specific BT.2020 compatibility. Or so I thought...

I recently explained to another member here my doubts about actually being able to engage the wider gamut on these older Sony sets, but if the Panny is somehow sensing the wider gamut from the xvYCC EDID data and enabling/mapping BT.2020 anyway then that's a huge bonus, I mean HUGE because I only ever thought I'd get SDR 709 out of this player connected to my 2014 Sony TV!

The colour definitely seems quite a lot better than blu-Ray, at first I thought I had a setting difference but then applied the exact same to both my blu-Ray player and the Panny. Greens especially look amazing and does skin tone.

I watched San Andreas right the way through, and the colourful scenes were great, e.g. Early on. Overall it can be quite a bland palette film, mainly due to the dusty destruction scenes. The CGI at the end was very poor. Seems to be a side effect of UHD, the lower rendered CGI sticks out more. Having looked at reviews of this disc afterwards, it seems it's not the best example of UHD. But it was free with the player.

Watching Life of Pi right now and that really, really looks special. Skin looks so natural. The chef on the boat for example, played by Gerard, in the rice scene, he looked like he was in the room, skin tone was spot on. With some calibration, blu-Ray's have looked realistic, but this was something else. Will report back once the film has finished.

Got to say, my biggest regret, is not getting more discs off Amazon,p.

Wish I got ASM2, Exodus and Expendables 3. Just to have more to watch.

Anyone looked at cost of importing US discs?
