Plus, I don't think Akijama has ever had a problem leaking out upcoming titles from Criterion. I would say it's either Arrow or Scream at this point, but more likely Scream. |

Considering the other films they have released, I don't know why Criterion would ever pass on Carrie, and I can't see anyone being able to outbid them for it, either. Sure, the elements might be in bad shape, and in that respect, I can't see anyone being in a better position to do more to remaster them than Criterion, either. But it would be very strange to have Criterion editions of Blow Out and Dressed to Kill in particular, only for them to let Carrie get away. |

Is the font size from the question different form the font of the answer? Because all I did was take the word Criterion or Scream from the question, and put it in the blotted out area. I did my own verification to see whether the font size were the same, and they appear to be, but I'm not particularity good at those things. My first hunch was for sure Criterion, but isn't it Shout who seem to be putting out more and more MGM titles as of late?

Phantom of the Paradise and Raising Cain were from different studios (Fox and Universal, respectively). I can't see Criterion hitting up MGM for Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, but leaving Carrie, arguably the best and definitely the most iconic of the lot, on the table. But you never know!

Which is another reason that Criterion would go after it hard, as they have an urge to release DVDs/Blus of old laserdisc titles,(and they posted a picture of their old laserdisc on instagram awhile back) but it doesn't seem like Criterion fits in the blanked out spot.

Put another way, there are many big licensees in the US for MGM fare, including Arrow, Criterion, Kino, Shout! and Twilight Time. Assuming it fit their profile (I.e. they could give it a great presentation), every one of them would probably be desperate for any new master of Carrie, to add it to their catalog. This is, after all, one of the most beloved horror films, from one of the most beloved decades in film, of all time. This is probably MGMs The Exorcist (Warner), Jaws (Universal), The Omen (Fox) or Rosemary's Baby (Paramount), and of all those films, Carrie is the only one that didn't have a great Blu-ray (at least announced) already. Criterion would be silly to pass on it, and MGM would be silly to offer it to anyone else first. I can't explain the social media message weirdness, but everything else makes sense. |

What a coincidence! I just watched the MGM blu-ray release of the original Carrie tonight, and I thought the video quality wasn't near as bad as people have claimed it to be. Could it looked better? probably yes, but the video was decent, and watchable.

Well, at least it isn't being released by Paramount, as who wants a copy of Carrie entitled:

As was said above, Scream/Shout did do two de Palma films, but both were from different studios (Fox and Universal), whereas Criterion has done two from MGM already, and as was said above Carrie had a Criterion LD (really hope this has the Bouzereau commentary). There's also the other argument that Arrow has released a large chunk of de Palma's early work including two that were done by Criterion. Arrow would fit in that space. But are there any alternate names for Criterion that would fit? Only one I could think of is Janus but that's reaching.
I got the Japanese release with a nice textured slipcover, I might sell that disc but I'm keeping that slip! |

Yeah Carrie was one of the first blu-rays that I ever watched and I still maintain the video quality is not that bad...actually pretty good. Your post sums it up perfectly, yes it could look better and hopefully this next release does, I don't want none of the color revisionist crap!
