Let's think here: Nancy Allen leaked a release before, of a film that she was involved in, started in and made herself available to interview for, and the company who produced that disc, was not Shout!, or MGM, or even Facets Video...it was The Criterion Collection. It's Criterion that Ms. Allen has worked with before, it's Criterion who have released several of De Palma's films from directly before and after Carrie, it's Criterion who have salvaged lauded MGM films from the 1960s and 1970s, and Criterion who have had great relationships with many of the people who worked on Carrie besides Nancy Allen and Brian De Palma, like, you know, Sissy Spacek, and Piper Laurie, and even Tony Manero himself. And it's Criterion who are synonymous with "Special Edition", particularly to actors and directors in Hollywood, along with most everyone over a certain age in the film industry.

So, maybe I'm wrong, and hey, maybe the earth is flat after all, but, I feel pretty overconfident about this one. And you know what they say, pride comes before the fall...of 2016.
I never heard anyone leak a specific date for a Criterion release. I feel like Criterion wouldn't divulge that to her, if they even schedule their specific dates so far in advance. This is besides the fact that Criterion doesn't even fit in the space blotted out.

Plus, I don't think Akijama has ever had a problem leaking out upcoming titles from Criterion. I would say it's either Arrow or Scream at this point, but more likely Scream.

I've never heard of anyone in Nancy Allen's position reveal an exact release date for anything, from any label ever. Now, it's true that I had forgotten that Arrow could have gotten the US release, but I just don't see this being a Scream Factory title. Arrow, yes, so mea culpa on that (and again Nancy Allen has also participated in new extras for Arrow releases, too), it would just surprise me if Arrow were able to outbid Criterion for this one.

Criterion has been releasing other Brian De Palma films, so a Criterion release of Carrie would fit perfectly with their catalogue in that regard.

Scream is releasing Raising Cain in September. No where near the level of Carrie, but still a De Palma movie.

Exactly, and right now, the strongest evidence that it might be from anyone else comes from people trying to re-size the word "Criterion" into a cropped, modified screencap of a social media message.

Considering the other films they have released, I don't know why Criterion would ever pass on Carrie, and I can't see anyone being able to outbid them for it, either. Sure, the elements might be in bad shape, and in that respect, I can't see anyone being in a better position to do more to remaster them than Criterion, either. But it would be very strange to have Criterion editions of Blow Out and Dressed to Kill in particular, only for them to let Carrie get away.

Is the font size from the question different form the font of the answer? Because all I did was take the word Criterion or Scream from the question, and put it in the blotted out area. I did my own verification to see whether the font size were the same, and they appear to be, but I'm not particularity good at those things. My first hunch was for sure Criterion, but isn't it Shout who seem to be putting out more and more MGM titles as of late?

Hope like hell, whatever label releases it (seems like Criterion's forte), that they licence the two excellent 45-minute documentaries from the SE DVD. That, and a top-notch restoration will get me to buy this again.

Phantom of the Paradise and Raising Cain were from different studios (Fox and Universal, respectively). I can't see Criterion hitting up MGM for Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, but leaving Carrie, arguably the best and definitely the most iconic of the lot, on the table. But you never know!

Which is another reason that Criterion would go after it hard, as they have an urge to release DVDs/Blus of old laserdisc titles,(and they posted a picture of their old laserdisc on instagram awhile back) but it doesn't seem like Criterion fits in the blanked out spot.

MGM have a very large library, though. Shout! seems to have carte blanche to lesser titles, and they seem to option many of the MGM action films, like their Cannon titles, but they don't seem to have very many horror titles from MGM, and they certainly don't seem to get titles as high caliber as Carrie.

Put another way, there are many big licensees in the US for MGM fare, including Arrow, Criterion, Kino, Shout! and Twilight Time. Assuming it fit their profile (I.e. they could give it a great presentation), every one of them would probably be desperate for any new master of Carrie, to add it to their catalog. This is, after all, one of the most beloved horror films, from one of the most beloved decades in film, of all time. This is probably MGMs The Exorcist (Warner), Jaws (Universal), The Omen (Fox) or Rosemary's Baby (Paramount), and of all those films, Carrie is the only one that didn't have a great Blu-ray (at least announced) already. Criterion would be silly to pass on it, and MGM would be silly to offer it to anyone else first.

I can't explain the social media message weirdness, but everything else makes sense.

But scream almost had it before as they have said.. so maybe this time they managed to win.. it's just 50/50 now.. I'd much much rather have a scream factory edition .. but it is what is...

What a coincidence! I just watched the MGM blu-ray release of the original Carrie tonight, and I thought the video quality wasn't near as bad as people have claimed it to be. Could it looked better? probably yes, but the video was decent, and watchable.

Well, at least it isn't being released by Paramount, as who wants a copy of Carrie entitled:

"The Running Down My Leg Edition"

As was said above, Scream/Shout did do two de Palma films, but both were from different studios (Fox and Universal), whereas Criterion has done two from MGM already, and as was said above Carrie had a Criterion LD (really hope this has the Bouzereau commentary). There's also the other argument that Arrow has released a large chunk of de Palma's early work including two that were done by Criterion. Arrow would fit in that space. But are there any alternate names for Criterion that would fit? Only one I could think of is Janus but that's reaching.

I got the Japanese release with a nice textured slipcover, I might sell that disc but I'm keeping that slip!

Yeah Carrie was one of the first blu-rays that I ever watched and I still maintain the video quality is not that bad...actually pretty good. Your post sums it up perfectly, yes it could look better and hopefully this next release does, I don't want none of the color revisionist crap!

I've only been a Blu-ray collector for 4 months really and so perhaps a lot of you guys are more crafty at getting Criterion's cheaper.
Because of the current sale at Barnes And Noble, I bought 6 of them for $19.19 each. Wasn't complicated at all. No craftiness either.
