Skipping 4K and waiting for 8K?

However, it's a very different situation, in that I don't believe 720p ever served as the top-end performance capability for a new physical media format.

Instead, we went straight from DVD to 1080i and 1080p blu-ray. So, in this situation, it's straight from 1080p to 4k, and it's not as if 8k is just about to arrive, and is being readied as the basis for yet another physical format.

And as has been noted previously in this thread, anything beyond 4k resolution is arguably redundant on the size of screens you might expect to see in the home environment.
