The film was scanned by EFilm at 6K and down-sampled to 4K with an Arriscan.
Leonnet colored from DPX files using Lustre software; the mastering resolution was 2K.

Speaking of throwing resolution away.

I absolutely loved every moment of this movie. What a refreshing change of pace from the usual overblown Hollywood garbage. Some obvious inspiration from "Umbrellas of Cherbourg", "New York New York" and so many others, but it does its own thing with the material. Definitely day one for me as well.

Excited that this broke the record for Golden Globe wins and I am excited to go see it again in IMAX this weekend.

Could it be a budget thing (doing the mastering in 2k instead of 4k)?

Either way this in WCG and HDR should look astonishing!

I have seen 4K masters with a lower budget than this. La La Land even gets Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision treatment.

Further on, I don't follow how decisions are made these days. They want to save the "medium" film but all we get are 2K stinking finishes.

Saw this yesterday. Absolutely loved it! I will probably see it once or twice more in theaters. Can't wait for the BD to get released.

The British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) nominations have been announced.

La La Land leads with 11 nominations. Arrival and Nocturnal Animals follow with 9 each.

I really hope this gets a Criterion release sometime down the line. I think it would be a perfect fit for the Criterion Collection.

I have feeling that the reason this was finished at 2K instead of 4K is because it's shot fairly softly in order to give that "old movie" look to it, so there wouldn't be much improvement in terms of detail, other than more refined grain. HDR, on the other hand...

The same could be said of Argo's anamorphic sections, they were shot with a very '70s look in mind but they look fabulous on UHD, thanks partly to the original 4K finish. And because of the way that LLL was shot it uses more of the 35mm frame than traditional 'scope (shot 2x anamorphic but with the full width of the aperture, cropped down slightly to 2.55) so missing out on a 4K finish here seems like criminal neglect. I find it particularly strange because Lionsgate have actually been really keen on 4K finishes in the last few years, keener than most studios.

Oh, I completely agree that it should have been a 4K finish, I was just trying to think of what could have justified 2K.

Yeah, the IMAX release has turned out to be WAAAAY more limited than I originally had been lead to believe.

I wonder how much of that had to do with the individual chains & theaters? Of the 4 closest IMAX to me, 2 will be showing La La Land while the other 2 will continue with Rogue One.

Maybe the movie was mastered at 2K because they were pressured by time to send it at movie festivals. Let's hope they will re-master it at 4K for the BluRays
