Huppert was definitely Oscar worthy, imo. I haven't seen Jackie yet, but she'd easily be my choice out of the other three nominees.

And either way, she was long overdue for a nomination.

Elle is grotesque greatness and a welcome return to form for Verhoeven - I thoroughly enjoyed it! I think the Academy only boosted their own credibility by FINALLY recognising Huppert.

Another worthy Huppert film that deserves the criterion treatment is Chabrol’s La Ceremonie - which in my view is one of the greatest modern Hitchcock-Homages.
And to think that it’s currently streaming on Filmstruck’s criterion channel is full on panic-inducing.

Nothing will win back the credibility they lost by not honoring her performance in the Piano Teacher.

Great Chabrol pick though! Story of Women is another Chabrol film where she kills it too (no pun intended )

Of the nominees, I def. want her for the win. But I'm pretty torn up that Rebecca Hall wasn't nominated for CHRISTINE, or Bening for 20TH CENTURY WOMEN.

Christine was a great film, Rebecca Hall was transformed. Shame it got ignored...

Then again, a lot of films didn't get the recognition it deserved.

I was walking on air when I left that CHRISTINE screening. Her performance is a powerhouse. She doesn't waste a single moment, line, expression, facial tic. And the film is so beautifully done. So many great supporting turns too-Maria Dizzia, Tracy Letts, John Collum, Michael C. Hall, almost right down the board. I was never really sold on Campos before this film, but his style fit this screenplay like a glove.

Also love Sandra Huller in TONI ERDMANN, though that kind of performance getting nominated is a bit more of a stretch for a foreign performance that isn't given by someone in a "legendary" status.

Arguably the best performance of the year.

I'm rooting for Huppert, but I know it will never happen.

What about Amy Adams?, she was in two of the best movies of the year and I am not talking about Batman V Superman .

She probably had more to do in Arrival, but the better film for me was Nocturnal Animals with only 1 nomination at least it was well deserved.

I thought Nocturnal Animals was pretty terrible.

But I'll try to refrain from the derailing.

Funny, but I've always kind of figured Mulvaney looked a little more like this:

Brightness is a very African movie (if one can say that) in terms of narration, culture and style, but I'd not call it great. I do admit, though, that the cultural differences in this case may be too great to reconcile, but I can mention a handful of other African movies I'd rank higher. Hyenes (1992) is probably my favorite African movie (but since its based on a Swiss play, one can perhaps question just how "African" it really is).

Sembene is famous for Xala (1975), but it's not one of his best in my opinion. While a send-up of post-colonial corruption is nice, it has a primitive style that belies his directorial skills (whether it was a deliberate attempt at "Africanizing" -?- his style or just a fluke I can't say). I'd recommend Camp de Thiaroye (1988), Mandabi (1968) and Moolade (2004) as three very good movies of his.

Well let's leave it at some of the most nominated movies of the year, if you count the Razzie awards

BTW doesn't matter if I hated the movie, nominating Ben Affleck for worst actor was just dumb, guess those awards are really craving for attention and need to nominate big movies just to be in the news.

I heard that the Razzie nominating committee isn't required to watch the movies, and most don't, so it is just the more infamous bad movies of the year that get nominated.

I have over 100 criterion blu ray titles that I would like to exchange for their DVD editions. Anyone interested ?. I'll try and upload my entire collection for those to see what they want.

A lot of people are disappointed that Amy Adams was not nominated for her work in Arrival, but I think that she gave a much better performance in Nocturnal Animals, and, as such, should have been nominated for her role in that one.

Nocturnal Animals is really something else. I've never so helpless while watching a movie. If you see it, then you'll know what I'm talking about.

I've seen 36 new movies from 2016. That may be a record for me. This was a good year for cinema. I usually struggle even to come up with 10 decent movies for an end-of-year top 10 list, but I had to leave several great films off this time.

I saw Moonlight last weekend, and loved it, but even that movie is a near-miss from my Top 10. I think that Naomi Harris and Mahershala Ali should both win Academy Awards for their supporting performances in the film.

I missed seeing a lot of highly-acclaimed 2016 flicks. Elle and Christine are two that come to mind.

A lot of offline friends keep telling me that I need to see Hidden Figures. I might go see it at a matinee this weekend, but, for the life of me, I just cannot get excited about this movie. Judging from the trailer, it has "predictable Oscar bait" written all over it. I could be wrong, though.
