Does anybody know with 100% certainty which other bluray or dvd editions I may find The Fellowship of the Ring bonus discs? As seen in the photos below, I have two discs that are cracked or broken in the center, so I need those exact same discs replaced. The first two photos are pics of the trilogy set that these discs came out of, and rest are of the damage. I'm just wondering if there are any other versions of the Fellowship of the Rings that have the exact same discs that I can replace the damaged ones with, or must I re-purchase the exact same trilogy set? Last November Amazon had this set on sale for $28, but I didn't know I needed a backup set at the time. I wish I had purchased it back then. But anyways, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My two towers extended edition DVD set from 2003 has a disc with the exact same chipped place and that DVD plays just as well today as it always has. I wouldn't waste money to rebuy these if they still play fine.

You're pushing it with over 3 hour films even given a BD-100.
The theatricals would be fine on 100GB discs, they'd need a very diligent encode but they'd be alright. The extendeds would require double-disc treatment, yes, but with two hours-ish for each disc that wouldn't be too taxing for 66GB platters. You underestimate just how efficient HEVC actually is, but - as always with lossy video compression - it depends on whether the people doing the encoding are hacks, journeymen or artists. Hacks will get you crap like what Lionsgate routinely churn out on their BDs, journeymen will provide the sort of "good enough" CBR-esque encodes like those from Shout and Criterion, and artists like D-MacK know how to squeeze the very best out of the encode.

To that end I'm pleasantly surprised by how few compression snafus there have been on UHD thus far, with the biggest culprits being Fox's ID4 and Paramount's ST '09.

Hi reneeatworld I would give this stuff a try [Bondic Liquid Plastic Welder Adhesive Kit] it has saved me many of my disc's that have the same issue.

A tiny bit of the glue smoothed over the crack or cracks a flash of the light and its like it never happened.

And a small piece of 360 grit sandpaper to smooth & blend

No they do not.
The boxed set only includes the Extended Editions of the films along with 3 bonus/making of DVDs per film. ( 15 discs total)

No. Region B had a theatrical-cut boxed set, but it's region locked. In Region A, there's this one:

but as you can see, it includes The Hobbit.

I still need to pick this up. The only reason I haven't is I own the set on standard dvd and the supplements in the blu set are SD still.

What don't people understand about this? They can't EVER be seen in HD if they were never FILMED in HD.

So you're holding off on watching the films in hi-def because the bonus features that were filmed in standard-def are on a standard-def disc format?

Huh.

I held off for a while for the same reason. The only reason I have the EEs is for the bonuses, and if they're the same discs, then what's the point? When Amazon had it for $26, I finally caved and PM'd at BB, laid a $5 RZ cert on it, and was happy.

Not holding off on watching.
Just owning the hi-def set hasn't been a huge priority for me. I know I'll pick it up eventually.

I posted this earlier in the thread but I interviewed Michael Pellerin in 12/2015 and again last fall. He directed all of the supplemental material on the LOTR and Hobbit films. He does talk about the stuff being in SD and how it won't probably ever be upconverted at some point in there.

Some really great info here if you are as into this stuff as we are.

Full 1-hour interview just after the Hobbit: BOFA EE came out: http://geekleagueofamerica.com/2015/12/09/21324/

If it was shot in SD, it's probably not possible to upconvert it. They're extras. I can live with it. I'm more interested in if they'll ever fix the mass excess of green .

True. If that's how they were shot, then that's how it is. I was more surprised that they opted for duplicating three DVDs per film, and the increased cost of the extra discs and manufacture/handling/storage of larger packaging, than remastering the extras even at SD res onto a BD.

The way the bonus features are authored on the DVDs (including the very complex navigation through various galleries) would be quite complex and costly to replicate on BluRay, I suppose. Replicating existing DVDs, however, is actually cheap.

Though I would have appreciated to have at least the concept art and photo galleries in HD instead of SD.

Yeah. I don't think that it is as easy as just copying the data onto the BDs and having a fully functional set of features. They would have to sit down and reprogram all of the interactive menus to facilitate a more user friendly experience. That would have cost a lot of money in man hours for design & execution alone. Add the extra cost of BDs and replication processes for them, it just costs too much to make the endeavour worthwhile for a business.
