My dad died in 1985. I was only two years old at the time. I saw my first Bond film maybe a year or two after that.... It was For Your Eyes Only... After that, Moore's Bond became a father figure for me in a way. In the school playground when the other kids were pretending to be Superman and Batman, I was pretending to be James Bond. Whenever another kid "killed" me, I would always bounce back with "you can't, because James Bond never dies!"

Well... Sadly, that day is upon us.

R.I.P Sir Roge. You really did give people a lot of pleasure and help dilute the harsher realities of life... in more ways than one.

What I really liked about Roger Moore is that he was so grateful and gracious with regards to the Bond series. He would never badmouth the series or anyone involved with it, he was the only Bond who recorded audio commentaries for the DVDs, when they brought out the Bond 50 blu-ray set five years ago it was Moore who helped promote it, he used to post answers to fan questions on Facebook every month and would politely answer the same fan questions asked of him over and over about his favourite Bond movie, etc. Compare that to, say, Sean Connery (who I'm a big fan of, don't get me wrong) who doesn't seem to give two shits about Bond. Roger Moore seemed to really relish and enjoy the role of "Bond Emeritus".

I remember listening to Paul McCartney's "Live and Let DIe" on my Sony transistor radio all that summer when it opened. Still have my LALD tarot card set (original 1973 version).

Just looked up that my library has both MY WORD IS MY BOND and ONE LUCKY BASTARD checked in. Did a hold for the latter, I hear it's a very funny read.

Roger Moore's commentaries on the Bond blu-rays are great. I love his genial, pour yourself a drink, relax, sit back, and let's have some fun attitude. You can tell he's a genuinely nice person you'd like to hang out with.

Very great to hear all that. I hear too much about actors hating their most famous roles (although many do have good reasons). Glad to know Roger Moore loved them.

I never saw a James Bond film in my life but I appreciate what they are and applaud all the Bonds. RIP Roger Moore.

The most delightful story he tells is on the Man With the Golden Gun commentary. It's the story of Herve Villechaize's failed seduction of Maud Adams. I can't tell if it's a real story or just something he made up to make you laugh (because the quip Maud Adams supposedly said sounds like something Roger would have come up with).

I won't spoil it. You have to hear it. But I still laugh about it. Actually, that whole commentary is great. Better than the movie.

Honestly I think the only weak film in the bunch is AVTAK. All the other films are good to great.

So based on some of the discussions about it earlier, I picked up the book "The Making of On Her Majesty's Secret Service" by Charles Helfenstein. It's a very good book full of plenty of detailed information about the production and an amazing array of photos, many of which I had never seen before. I thoroughly recommend it to any Bond fan, though maybe wait for a bit of a price drop if you can.

I have a couple of minor criticisms about it though. One is that there are a few little grammatical errors here and there, mainly missing or incorrect conjunctions. Nothing major, but it's just annoyingly sloppy at times. There's even an instance of "Licence To Kill" being spelled "License To Kill", which is something any Bond historian should know better. But I put that down to perhaps the fault of the proofreaders at the publishing company rather than the author himself.

The other thing is that the book doesn't go into as much detail as I would have liked about Lazenby's departure. I haven't seen Becoming Bond yet, so that might provide some answers but I've never really found a satisfying explanation about the whole reason behind his departure (other than his belief that Bond was a fading 60s fad and that Easy Rider style hippie pictures were the future). For example, every other Bond was signed to a multi-picture deal beforehand but seemingly Lazenby was not. I would have thought the whole idea of signing an inexperienced nobody was so that you could get him cheap and lock him down for many years just so he couldn't bail at the first opportunity. I've always found it odd that he was able to just extricate himself so easily from the series like that.

In any event, I've already ordered the Making of The Living Daylights, addressed to my wife so that she and the kids can gift it to me for Father's Day, and I'm very much looking forward to it.
