Though I figured it was doing well in 70mm. It was pretty packed when I went, while Kong: Skull Island at the same theater as well as Hateful Eight in a different theater from this same chain (this theater did not play Hateful Eight) were less than half full for comparison. |

It's fascinating how much the audio portion of this film has been neglected in this thread.
Zimmer's score: A-M-A-Z-I-N-G |

![]() Not to mention it got INCREDIBLY loud in the IMAX theater - had to plug my ears a few times. 126dB peaks. Of course I come from an era (60s-70s-80s) where they actually composed incredible music. |

I thought that Dunkirk's sound design was wonderful and said so in a couple of earlier posts. I agree with you that Hans Zimmer's score was terrific and added significantly to the dramatic impact of the film.

That scene, and the sling-shot maneuver (including when the Rangers detach) are my two score favorites in that film.

in contrary i'm a huge fan of Hans i couldn't imagine The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Interstellar or even Dunkirk... without Hans Zimmer beautiful/epic scores... i guess to each to their own...

Just saw this in 70mm (non IMAX) at the same theatre I saw an Interstellar 70mm presentation and Dunkirk looked MUCH MUCH better. They opened with a 70mm trailer for "The Orient Express" which was wobbly and very soft and I thought to myself "Oh no.." but Dunkirk looked amazing - The UHD will be mind blowing I think.

We just haven't had time yet but I'm pushing my wife to go hopefully this week, I've been hearing nothing but great things about this film. The theater near us doesn't have IMAX but I'm sure when the UHD comes out this will look and sound incredible....

My only quibble about the film, one which others have noted too, is that the dialog tends to be muddy and sometimes hard to understand. I am really anxious to get the UHD HDR version of Dunkirk so that I can turn on the subtitles and fully understand all of the dialog instead of just some of it. Trying to understand Tom "Mumbles" Hardy's fighter pilot jargon, most of it delivered from behind an oxygen mask, was a particular challenge. |

I like Zimmer when he's in "classic score" mode but his "experimental" (clicks and bops and ticking clocks!) mode is almost exclusively what he does now and I'm not digging it.
Let's just say the Kung Fu Panda 3 score suffered severely with John Powell out of the equation. |
