I never saw it mentioned here on this thread or on their Gkids Twitter but does that mean that Miss Hokusai, Phantom Boy, and April and the Extraordinary World also won't get a re-release?

Those are already released by GKIDS (through Universal), and even if they weren't, they're not Ghibli so they wouldn't be part of this deal. Plus, Miss Hokusai is the only one out of those that's actually anime, the other two are from France.

Finally decided to get these on Blu with the good prices and all. Had a few of them on DVD. Based on the various threads here I decided to get the Disney releases of:

- Arrietty
- The Cat Returns
- Howl's Moving Castle
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Porco Rosso
- Spirited Away
- Tales from Earthsea
- Whisper of the Heart
- The Wind Rises
- Ponyo (I know it has lossy audio, but it's not worth 6$ to me just for that)
-Nausicaa (Again, not worth 6$ to me just for some credits)

Then I'll be getting Gkids versions of Kiki, Laputa, and Mononoke. And then at some point I'll get the previous GKids releases like Only Yesterday.

I have the Disney releases. Not worth double dipping if I only watch the English language versions? I hate subtitles!

The only reason you might want to double dip is if they change the score on Castle in the Sky. You can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle...tween_versions

I haven't watched the blu-ray myself, since that one wasn't my favorite, so I'm used to the old DVD version which has the orchestral score and the chatter. The blu-ray has the synth score and lacks the chatter. We don't know if the new release will have the orchestral score or the synth score yet.

I had no idea they tampered with these films so much. Hopefully these releases remedy some of it. Or at least give us the options for the original stuff.

Best Buy has Porco Rosso and The Secret World of Arrietty up for pre-order at a handsome price of $17.99. Hopefully Amazon will price match.

For any Canadians interested in the Ghibli stuff from GKIDS, they're showing preorder prices of $24.47 each on Amazon dot ca. Hopefully this goes down.

Wait, Pom Poko wasn't fixed on the box set? I guess that means it probably won't be fixed for this new release? Does anyone know if the subtitles are correct on the Hong Kong release (or other imports)?

I was thinking I might be interested in picking up Pom Poko this time around, but only if the tanuki are called tanuki, and refer unabashedly to their testicles, as Jesus intended.

Anyone knows if the Canadian GKIDS releases have identical slips and art as their US counterparts, or they come with bilingual text? Many thanks in advance.

i think only the miyazaki movies are on the box set, so that one wasn't in it

Pom Poko is a Takahata film, like Only Yesterday and My Neighbors the Yamadas, so of course it wasn't in the Miyazaki box set. But I believe GKids release will have new subtitles, since the dubtitles seemed to be Disney's doing and I believe the Japanese DVD had a real translation (meaning one exists and can be used). Plus GKids is smart enough to know better.

Oh yeah. Right.

In that case I'd guess the subtitles will be fixed. Wait and see I guess.

I think the Tanuki are still called raccoons on the actual English subs on the Japanese disc. Funny, thing is Tanuki are called raccoons in the Only Yesterday English subs ,but are called Tanuki in the Only Yesterday English dub. Also Ghibli updated the subs on the Gauch the Cellist blu-ray. Tanuki are now called Tanuki instead of Badgers like in the old Gauch DVD.

I don't even remember tanuki in Only Yesterday...

I kind of get the rationale behind calling them raccoons, though. It's like how when I taught in Japan, we would translate mukade and suzumebachi into centipedes and giant hornets for the kids in class, even though there's no way in hell I'd consider a mukade and a centipede to be the same creature (mukade are as thick as your finger and can be 8 inches long), and "giant hornet" is a massive understatement seeing as how a suzumebachi sting can put you in the hospital. I guess it boils down to how they're taught not to leave a word in Japanese unless they absolutely have to, whereas we embrace loan words from various languages.

The Gkids Arrietty disc may have both English dubs.

As I said before, once this is confirmed, a double dip on this one is guaranteed for me!
