It is very bad in Power Rangers on the 970. Must be the disk. In dark scenes the black bars are light gray, in bright scenes they are super dark black. I noticed it after 30 seconds of watching.
Handshake issues (b6 owner)

So I did the DV update. This is the first time I have used this player. I am having an issue. When a disc loads and everything starts fine, but the picture goes dark. Almost like a dim reverse negative. This is at the disc menu. I have to toggle the hdmi input on my B6 for the picture to "kick in". Once the movie starts it does it again and I have to do the same procedure and then all is fine. I am going straight from the player to my B6 and using the same hdmi cables that were connected to my Sammy 4k player.
Yet another same issue
Quote:
I got the dark screen right after the update...what I did was that I turned tv off, disconnect the hdmi cable...then unplugged the LG for 30 seconds...then everything worked great after that....

This is e6 user was not that pleased:
Quote:
Ok guys,a few things:
OLED E6 user here
- I was wrong, Dolby Vision dark movie/bright movie can't be used without change a few things (And still will look bad)
- Dolby Vision is totally broken and we have to speak with LG to ask for a fix
- Resident Evil Vendetta does not have black bars since its a fullscreen movie
- The movie shows an INSANE BLACK CRUSH because of broken Dolby Vision, we're talking about easily loosing from 0-5% black levels, which means that on dark scenes (this movie have A LOT), we dont see a ****, it's just everything dark, the only way to see all the crushed detail is to use Dolby Vision Vivid (Which of course shows an image with tons of errors on colours, but it shows the darkest details)
- To give yourself an idea, to see all the lost black detail i have to raise brightness up to 55-56 on any other Dolby Vision mode (52 already creates black glow...)
- Increase OLED LIGHT to see a bit more of image induces to huge clipping

So please, everyone with a OLED TV, go to LG website and talk with chat service to give this feedback, with the hope it gets fixed, on my part i've already sended feedback to LG Spain, later i'll talk with LG UK and US
followup comments:
Quote:
Quote:
I think all the LG's when viewing DV they need to have dynamic contrast to at least low to bypass this problem. I read this in LG oleds threads.
Not even Dynamic contrast solves it (Plus that will alter a lot the image and create clipping) it's something that needs to be fixed via Dolby Vision Firmware itself
Quote:
Quote:
Thanks. I see what you mean. Thought leaving it OLED Light on 50 makes the image way too dark for viewing. So maybe I put it somewhere in between. I'll experiment.
You do not need to experiment, people NEEDS to talk with LG so they talk with Dolby to fix it, if not we will stay with this crush
As I recall it was issues like the above that cause the LG help desk to recall the DV update, consult with Dolby and then the DV playback was put on indefinite hold.

I have LG E6 OLED with DV.
I have UP970 with DV Firmware update.
I have like 30 4K HDR10 Blu Ray movies.
I have like 8-10 DV Blu Ray Disks.

All my DV Disk PQ played from the UP970 are Magnificient.
So my experience concurr with many many other posters too from various forums with their UP970 with the DV Firmware and various DV Disk.

Guess many of us are just Fortunate. And not have to pay $649 + Tax + Shipping or plus much more for Euro version for a DV Player

No Doubt you can ask a 1000 UP970 Owners with the DV Firmware updated on their units Why It Was Pulled?...

and LIKELY near a 1000 would say They Have Absolutely No Idea. And that near all 1000 of them would likely say that they are having a Blast watching very high PQ UP970 DV Disk Movies

I've decided to wait until the next wave of uhd Blu-ray players, so at the earliest next spring. My mother in law has already picked up the Sony x800 months ago to give our family as a Christmas present. It was recommended by me because Sony was rumored to be supporting dv in a future firmware update. This turned out to not be the case.

At the present time I'm using a refurbished Samsung k8500 from when I picked up the LG c6. and i plan to sell it once we unwrap the Sony. And will probably sell the x800 once a reasonably priced player comes out with a UHD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision support BUILT IN, and proper app support with ALL the major apps. Vudu, Netflix, Amazon are the ones I would expect.
Until then, I don't think there's a single player that has all these features currently on the market. Oh, and separate hdmi audio out, that is still a requirement for me. My onkyo tx Sr705 still kicks real hard through the 7.1 Energy speakers I got mounted through the room, so I really see no reason to upgrade the receiver till next year at the earliest.

In your quest for a DV player... be known that VUDU App on Sony's only supports streaming HDX or 1080p. Not 4K. Not HDR10. Not DV.

VUDU has just implemented reciently HDR10 Streaming with its first appx 35 HDR10 movies. DV wise there is near 140 movies.

Don't know if the new 2018 Sony Blu Players VUDU App will be any different.

yes :: "no problems"
whatever the reason that LG 'pulled' the Dolby Vision firmware update
clearly (to those of us fortunate enough to have it) :: it was not technical issues
it will also become clear to UP970 owners (universally) when it again is available
clearly :: it is generally an unknown as to why LG removed the Dolby Vision firmware update
what is unfortunate though, is how many instigate 'something' without any indications by owners that have it
"i am beginning to think that those without it might just be jealous" (they are 'missing out' - for now)

They dont just pull a firmware for no reason. If there was no problem they would of re released it by now. Your fan boyism is why people question your post. Read this board and others have problems with this player they even sent it back 3 times and still lucky garbage could’nt fix it. So why is it oppo has the dv update and it works but this player had it pulled ???

That's a VERY reasonable list of "must haves" for a UHD plauyer. This is 2017. It REALLY shouldnt be that hard to find what you are looking for but nooooooo. Bluray players have been around a long time now and UHD players arent all that different just adding 4K and HDR on top.
Screw those companies!

Woah there sunny. It is very possible that they pulled it for some business/agreement/contract/licensing reason!
They could have released it but then found out they werent actually ALLOWED to due to royalties to Dolby or some other bull shit. CLEARLY, too many people have ZERO issues with it so it aint a tech issue!

Question for those lucky few who have the DV update:
Does the Netflix app also stream DV or is it all HDR10? Is the DV update in effect only with discs?

If you go back to my earlier post LG was getting a lot of complaints about black crush when playing DV media, dark screens encountered when starting to playing content, and the floating bar issues with DV media.

As for pulling FW likely could have been a knee jerk reaction to not wanting DV observations to be problematic with LG DV capable displays and working with Dolby to make sure playing DV media was thoroughly tested again for both products.

The DV firmware that LG released only supports discs. Netflix is HDR10 only, but LG's website used to say that DV support would be added in the future. That information has since been removed...

CES 2018 Las Vegas is first week of January.

LG CES Grand Stage would Demo LG DV Player's Magnificient PQ Right.

Likely just as my LG UP970 playing DV Blu disc at home now

Whats with Dolby Inc???? Holding up Sony TV's from implementing DV on their Displays. And Holding Up LG UP970 DV firmware

That could very well be the reason! Or at least something very close to that

The repair company ran me today and was incredibly rude. They threatened to return my player unfixed if I didn't let them pick up one of my 4K discs. I told them I really didn't appreciate the tone and stance they were taking (especially since they were trying to blackmail me; "give us one of your 4K discs or we won't fix your player") and have now asked Very for a refund on my player. Dolby Vision isn't worth it if the repair company LG uses is going to be incredibly rude and attempt to blackmail customers.

That is an incredible story. I'm sure LG UK does not know of this repair shop's tactics and they would terminate them if they knew this. Craziest thing I have every heard for anyone in any capacity demanding any property from a customer to perform warranty service.

Could it be that the repair shop wants to see a sample of the disc that is causing the problem you are experiencing with the UP970 so they can see the issue and format of your disc and they are not going to steal your disc?

Hope you get this resolved quickly.

I'd imagine they're trying to say that the disc is authored slightly out of spec and at fault. It's like a repairman asking for your pair of jeans that were in your dryer when it started making a grinding noise.

I know BDs are pretty resilient, but if the LG service centre is like most repair shops it's going to be a coaster for the majority of it's stay with them.

All they have to do is pop down their local supermarket and pick up a handful of titles the customer has mentioned. It's like a repairman asking for your pair of jeans that were in your dryer when it started making a grinding noise.
