I remember hearing estimates that say that Blu-ray should take half the sales of movies by 2012. Well I am no expert, but I have to say this sounds logical to me.
Blu-ray has already achieved a strong momentum and strong sales in a declining economy. This might actually help BD as long as the manufacturers can keep player prices down, and the MSRP of movies drop soon. In 3-4 years time, I can definitely see Blu-ray being the primary choice for viewers. Sure DVD will be around for another 10 years or so, but it won't be dominate for much longer.
Look at it this way, how long was it till you saw commercials advertising DVDs and not DVD and VHS (or Video and DVD)? A lot longer than it took them to get Blu-ray only commercials out. Blu-ray is actually at a faster pace than DVD was, and it is increasing despite the economy. While DVD is and was the more successful video format to date, Blu-ray has the potential to outdo that. Digital downloads have almost no market share, and are far more hype than performance. They are pushed more by companies like Apple and MS and whatnot because they can make more money than the studios off of these. But at $3 a rent, there is no way that these can achieve the turn around that Blu-ray has.
Blu-ray will most likely overtake DVD in 3-4 years time, but only time will tell.
