My 4K TV and player upscale them and they do look great! They'll most likely stick with the final 2K DI for TROTK and TTT, but I don’t know what resolution the newer OCN scans of those parts of fellowship were done at. Whether it’s upscaled or a new Master they’ll do something with the HDR which might make it worth it either way. Also perhaps they could make the compression a little tidier on BD66s or what I’d like to see would be just 1 Disc per film.

If 2K DI sourced Harry Potter is any indication, LOTR will most certainly be an upgrade on UHD BD. Improved encoding on a 100gb disc will not only help squeeze out a little more detail and natural film-like refinement, but many of the scenes in LOTR would look outstanding with a tasteful HDR grading (again, see Potter UHD BDs).

That said, yes the current BDs are rather nice.

Very good points, especially the 1 disc advantage. Well, i guess we'll see, as for now i'm more than happy with my Blu-ray 15 discs set.

I think the already amazing looking scene on the EE BD where Aragorn is fighting the Nazgûl with fire would look even better with HDR.

Haha. Are you talking about Weathertop? I always laugh at that scene knowing that Viggo Mortensen was just hired and flown in and basically shot that scene with no sword training. Seeing him flailing that sword around is funny.

It might be better to ask this in the music section, but does anyone know why the soundtracks(Complete Recordings) of the extended cuts of FOTR and TTT aren't available anywhere digitally? You can get ROTK digitally and listen to it on Spotify but I can't find the other two anywhere but some youtube videos. They are my favorite film scores ever and I want to add them to my music collection without having to pay 300 dollars each for the out of print physical copies. As popular as these films are I'm confused and frustrated by the lack of availability.

^this

It really annoys me how only The Return Of The King is available but not the others. There’s so much missing on the normal soundtrack releases.

I have all three in physical form. I wish I had bought two of each. I'd be rich.

Lucky. As much as I would love to own them, I would just be happy with the MP3s right now. Guess I'll have to settle for listening to them through youtube until another option presents itself. Just do not understand at all why they won't make them available.

I have the first one on cd and the other two as 320kbps MP3s. I can not bring myself to pay those prices to obtain the cds.

If you just want the music, you can check the CD sections at your local library.

Yeah, I had considered that. I checked my library's catalog to see if they have them and they don't. They may be able to do an Interlibrary loan and get them for me though so I think I'll look into that.

Definitely worth looking into. Those CDs are amazing and I can’t believe they’re out of print and not even available digitally.

The San Antonio Public Library has them. You know, if you want to travel to San Antonio.

I miss the color and the brightness much more than the shade.

We've been going through a Hobbit Lord of the Rings marathon over the last week and it was the first time I got to see the Lord of the Rings since DVD. After finishing up the Hobbit trilogy and moving on to Fellowship of the Ring, my wife and I kept wondering why the picture and people's skin looked all screwed up. So we come here and sure enough there's this long thing all about it. How did I miss all that lol?! So anyhow, I just put in an order for the theatrical edition for Fellowship, but wanted to make sure the other two extended editons aren't similarly messed up (Two Towers, Return of the King)?

The other two extended films are fine compared to FotR.

Sounds like your TV needs calibrating.

The FOTR tint issue is no where near that overblown.

Even if perfectly calibrated, if you're going from The Hobbit to FoTR, or from FotR to the remaining LotR films you will see a change in grading. It's still noticeable, even if some have exaggerated it.
