I like movie night to be a first time film experience.

I won't get to play much here this weekend. I am attempting to instruct a friend on how to build a desktop pc from the motherboard up over the phone, or maybe via a video chat app like Zoom (Skype sucks). My friend has never built a pc before, so this should be an interesting endeavor.

There is even talk of a catch up website and streaming service from the industry. That won’t take long to catch on across the board.
Oh well, sucks to be us.

But probably not.

I'm denying that it sucks to be us. In point of fact it's pretty freaking awesome to be us.

We've never had so much content at our fingertips, it's never looked or sounded as good and TVs have never been cheaper or bigger.

It's never been better to be us.

And you think that's all going to collapse because people like watching cats chasing laser pointers on their phones.

And maybe you're right.

But probably not.

Request denied. I'm not interested in crawling inside your head to see the dystopian world that could be. I'm much more interested in looking at the world as it is and in that world your 'rise of short form video' is YouTube.

Unless and until you can draw a much more clear and much more direct line between somebody watching a video on their phone and something that actually matters to me I'm not going care too terribly much at all if people wanna watch videos on their phones.

Sorry.

It will be challenging, but I have a couple of aces up my sleeve.

I have two friends in reserve to help if needed, one is a systems programmer at the local university and the other is a software engineer/ CIO in New Zealand.

Between all of us, hopefully we can get this thing built.

Hey Vilya, I didn't know you were so talented, I have been building my Workstations since the DOS days. I only use SuperMicro MB's, with Intel Processors, and either Seagate or Western Digital HDD's. I always start with Case, MB, Processor, Memory, Video, and Power. Let it rip, see if it POST then go from there to HDD. I know now we have SSD, and Samsung is the best right now.

Talented? Hardly, but I follow directions pretty good. Thanks for the compliment just the same.

In this case, my friend's old motherboard died. We are ripping that out and replacing it a with a slightly newer mother board, a slightly newer processor, and faster memory- just 8 GB worth.

We will be salvaging the Corsair HX850 Gold power supply, still under warranty no less, the DVD burner, a multi card reader, a half TB Crucial SSD, wireless network adapter, and the video card. We will be using the same mid tower case.

Then we get to reinstall Windows 7 Professional (N) and every piece of software he formerly had. Thankfully, he also has most of his stuff backed up onto an external Western Digital 750GB hard drive.

Just a few fun hours of nerdvana ahead of us. Hopefully, we will be successful. It will be a good learning experience for my friend and a good refresher for me. It has been 3 years since I last built a pc, but mine was done with all brand new parts. I have three half TB Samsung SSDs in my PC; they have been excellent drives thus far.

That's too bad he never upgraded to Windows 10, it's a very good OS. Like I said, I like SuperMicro MB's they are solid and never fail. The top rated ones now are Gigabyte, Ausus, ASRock, and MSI, don't buy what ever failed. What Processor was he using AMD or Intel? Like you know the Processor and Memory have to be compatible with the MB. I say no less than an Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen5, I've had the Intel i7 for 5years. Good Luck, if you have questions let me know.

IMO windows 10 kind of sucks compared to windows 7. You give up privacy, get forced mandatory updates that may brick your machine, lose windows media player and lose the dvd player. You also get a os on a desktop that's built for a touch screen you don't have making interactions very counter intuitive. If windows 10 wasn't a free "upgrade" I'm pretty sure it would have bombed.

1. The same privacy changes were made to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

2. There are ways to block the mandatory updates (like using third party apps, or upgrading to Pro/Enterprise editions).

3. Windows 10 has Windows Media Player.

4. Windows 8.1 was built for a touch screen. Windows 10 is a legitimate desktop operating system.

5. Windows 7 will only continue receiving security updates until 2020 and then it will become the same security hole as running Windows XP.

If Windows 10 is so bad, look at the alternatives like Windows 8.1 which will be supported for awhile yet. Or Linux. Or Mac.

It was an Asus motherboard that failed, but it was also 7 years-old. Even the great brands sometimes fail. We will be replacing this with another Asus product.

I like Asus and my pc uses one of their motherboards. I went with this brand because my friend the software engineer highly recommends them.

We are basically just doing this rebuild to delay buying a brand new machine. That same friend I referenced above donated the replacement board, the processor, and the memory, so there is actually no money being spent on this project.

The "new" processor is an Intel i3 series replacing an AMD Phenom II X4. We are going from 8 GB of DDR2 memory to 8GB of DDR3 memory.

We are retaining the Corsair HX 850 Gold power supply, the Sapphire Radeon HD 6970 2 GB video card, DVD burner, card reader, and the Crucial half TB SSD. The goal is to provide a working pc that does the tasks my friend typically performs until he wants to spend money on a truly new pc.

As there is no cash involved here, just our time, it makes the project a lot less stressful. Thanks for the offer to help, but as I mentioned earlier I have two professionals in reserve should we run into trouble.

I have kept Windows 7 Professional (N) on my pc. My buddy the software engineer/ CIO has done the same. You should hear him criticize Windows 10! He rips it to ribbons.

I am not going to get into all of that, but I have long trusted his advice on these matters, so I plan to keep Windows 7 at least until support for it ends.

Aesthetically, I don't like the look and feel of Windows 10, but that is likely due in part to my comfort and familiarity with Windows 7.

It looks like I will have little choice in the matter when support for Windows 7 ends. Maybe by 2020, Windoze 10 will have improved- but I'm not holding my breath.

Apple products are very stylish, but they are also vastly overpriced. Far less computing power per dollar spent than with a pc. For what an Apple costs, I can build a more powerful pc every time.

I like the flexibility that pcs provide. You can build your own custom machine with every single part hand selected for both quality and functionality. Every dime spent on only exactly what you want. You can readily repair a pc yourself and it is easy to perform hardware upgrades when desired. I have not seen anywhere near that kind of flexibility with an Apple.

But them Apples are pretty to look at.
