Medusa still around?

I remember them from the VHS days.

Their covers were awesome - I remember renting The Wraith back in '87 with that glorious metallic-like cover.

I think they were the ones who licensed out the titles to Cine Asia a few years back for their Cine Asia Presents Hong Kong Legends line. I'm assuming they still have UK rights to most of these titles.

Medusa's deal was with Media Asia.

Eureka would have to deal with Fortune Star.

Medusa was a UK video company.

I think looking beyond Golden Harvest and Shaws, the other major resource would be Seasonal, but lord knows what state their archive is in.

Yes, a staple of the 80s and 90s VHS genre market and original parent company of HKL. Their deal was with Media Asia until Fortune Star took ownership of the Star TV catalogue.

Mei Ah had the rights to Seasonal films in Hong Kong. Beyond that, I don't know. The company existed until as late as 2008, so the chance of new HD masters being available or available for production are better than some.

Would love to see Blu-rays for the likes of Ring of Death, The Bloody Fists, and Legend of a Fighter.

Contender later bought Medusa, apparently just to get the Will and Grace titles! HKL began to fall by the wayside.

What happened to the reversible artwork for these, it has been removed from there description? Would be fantastic to include the international cut for PS2 also.

Hopefully this is the start of something special for HK action films being released here in the UK, since Hong kong Legends (and to a lesser extent the Easter Cinema label) these films haven't got the treatment and respect they surely deserve.
There are so many amazing films waiting to find an audience and fingers crossed Eureka (maybe Arrow too) can give the fans what they truly been lacking - a respectable amount of releases of these amazing films.
One film i hope gets a long overdue release is John Woo's lost film "Just Heroes" made between The Killer and Bullet In The Head, it's chock full of his balletic gunplay, themes of brotherhood and chivalry and has a very intriguing plot about Triad loyalties. It stars Danny Lee from The Killer and an early role by Stephen Chow and features an amazing finale which rivals Woo's earlier A Better Tomorrow 2.
Please Eureka pick this u if you can!

Last time I asked Arrow about HK movies the reply was the market was not big enough...a bit odd seeing some of the obscure titles they release.
Agree about Just Heroes, the only decent DVD release was in France and that had no English subs. Hopefully, if Police Story sells well enough Eureka will continue the trend.
I just got a review disc through for Iron Monkey and after flicking through it seems excellent quality, much better than the HK Blu ray I have.

It's a little odd. It's anecdotal but the reactions to the HK releases on facebook and here have been far more enthusiastic than anything else and Police Story particularly seems to be generating buzz. That definitely sounds like a fobb off answer.

I just watched the Drunken Master release and the quality jump after the HK Legends disc is extraordinary ... and I used to think those HK legends were pretty impressive I wouldn't expect any obscure titles for some time though - we'll probably get The Killer is we get Woo, let's be honest. But I certainly wouldn't complain as long as the releases continue to be this good!

I know for a fact that Arrow have been interested in HK cinema and even planned at least one release that I've been waiting two years for that never surfaced so I can only assume things broke down between them and Fortune Star or they ultimately decided the "market wasn't big enough", who knows?

Going even further back I think they were looking to dip their toes into Shaw Bros territory back when Calum Waddell was still on board, but obviously that relationship broke down and Waddell moved to 88 films and brokered their Shaw Bros run.

for a market to be "not big enough" for a label, i would read "viable" in it's place - and i'd suggest the condition / preservation (lack of) HK films in general would mean the cost of doing a decent presentation versus the amount of people they'd typically manage to sell to would mean they'd be too expensive.

i imagine that the 'police story' restorations, being done elsewhere and provided by license, makes these viable for a UK release if the licensing cost is not too high. they've certainly not got to source a print and restore it themselves, which is the tough part of the situation compared to small films from other countries?

I totally agree about Arrow releasing some of the real obscure films that I am sure 90% of their consumers have never heard off, every month they seem to announce films which make no sense to me from a business standpoint.
Hong Kong films are VERY poorly represented here in the UK and fingers crossed these new releases of Iron Monkey and Police Story which be a turning point.
I mean actors like Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, Stephen Chow are more well known here in the UK then some of the obscure horror films these companies tend to be releasing.

Maybe they get the licenses for those very cheaply? -> Can afford to make a release.

But they release about 15-20 of those every year? Why not put that money towards getting 5-10 premium releases from Hong Kong and China? I mean how many people actually bought their release of 'Pieces' ?

Yeah but you've got to understand that in Arrow's case they've firmly established themselves as a Cult Horror label that bring interesting obscure cult classics to the BD medium, so their consumer base know to take a risk on an Arrow release of a horror they may not recognise (a good example is the recent Bloodthirsty Trilogy that they put out). Arrow have not made that establishment for Asian action cinema so it's not an area that they probably feel so confident about. It's a chicken & egg scenario because unless they take a chance and establish a HK range, they can't rely on their brand to push titles into the hands of consumers who ordinarily may not have jumped.

Obviously Eureka are in the process of taking that first step so hopefully someone at Arrow is sitting back and keeping an eye on how they do with these first group of HK martial arts releases.
