I rewatched Great Expectations (1998) for the first time in years. It's a really cool modern take on Charles Dickens' classic novel. I recommend it even if you don't like Dickens. The DVD is non-anamorphic, but since its 2.40 widescreen it looks pretty good when you use your TV's zoom function.

Also watched the first season of Saved By The Bell. Loved the show as a kid and didn't know how it was going to be rewatching as an adult. It's fun and an overall decent sitcom. It makes for great background TV when you're doing chores around the house and what not. Slowly making my way through the set.

Ordered:

This'll be the first time I've seen the movie since it was in theaters. Recent viewings of Noe's Climax and Harmony Korine's Beach Bum - both photographed by Benoit Debie - inspired this purchase. I also want to be reminded of what a Noe movie with real actors looks like.

I saw Climax earlier this week and liked it a lot. I’m curious to check out his other movies now. I have Enter the Void on Blu-ray to watch next month. I’m going to look for Irreversible on streaming and if I can’t find it I’ll just order the DVD.

Watched with my Dad.

The video quality was spectacular. Especially considering it was upscaled on his 42" 1080p tv.

The audio was a mixed bag. Dialogue and sound effects are clean and distinct, however the Score is mixed WAY too loud. Throughout most of the movie, the score wails and screams above tolerable levels. Fortunately, it's usually (but not always) between moments of dialogue. There's also a fairly prominent hiss that's always present. That's somewhat common in old movies and you can adjust to it quickly. Hopefully the blu-ray has a more balanced audio track.

3.5/5 for the film
5/5 for the video quality
1.5/5 for the audio quality

My most recent DVD purchase / watch was Bug, a '70s horror movie about intelligent killer cockroaches, produced by William Castle. A string of old creature features led me to wanting to revisit it (I saw it when I was young). It was around twenty bucks on Amazon, and looked like it may be OOP. But I found a used copy online for under $10 shipped.

Nice finds. Tough to beat Value Village and the Sally Ann from time to time. I've picked up lots of discs for a fraction of what they're going for online.

Heard that Family Dollar had the Robotech: The Macross Saga DVD set for $4. Didn't find that, but came across this. I thought I had it already, but apparently not. It's the Canadian release I assume since mine had English/French text on the cover.

It's been especially busy there in the last year or two with more and more people dumping their collections in favour of streaming.

I would say that I have three or four locations within a 10 min. drive and they all have extremely high turnover rates. Every week or two there is another new batch of DVDs.

However, if I had a nickel every time I saw SPIDER-MAN or THE LORD OF THE RINGS, I would be a rich man.

I'm gonna have to check out Bug, as I'm a sucker for anything William Castle (especially the original House on Haunted Hill).
