The face is like a Magic Eye, first glance to me is always Clooney, but the more I look at it the lees it looks like him. The teeth aren't fake enough.

Sort of, except Brazil the film has Brazil the song in it, but I've seen Japon a few times, and I'm sure neither Japan or anything Japanese is ever seen or mentioned in it.

I just signed up for the criterion channel. For $89 a year you can’t beat that price. I mainly want to watch current and coming soon blu-ray titles from CC to check if I want to buy them. Did they in the past (wasnt a Filmstruck member) have a pretty good selection of current and future bluray titles?

Why couldn't it have been Popeye with a giant Robin Williams head instead?

Yes, it's a great deal, especially if you haven't seen the majority of their collection. The selection on Filmstruck was excellent, as were the features and supplements, and the new collection is also augmented by an equally robust collection of films from outside of the Criterion library.

No offense, but this is starting to get silly. I understand the desire for films we all love getting the Criterion treatment. But if everything that already has gotten a release gets another, then eventually, when, for all intents and purposes, physical media goes the way of the Dodo Bird, we're all going to lament that ____ "never got a blu-ray release".

Times three hundred.

The Shape of Water was released a year ago by the now defunct Twentieth Century Fox. Our reviewer Jeffrey Kauffman scored the video as reference quality, the audio near reference quality, and the disc contains at least an average number of extras.

What would be the justification for getting a Criterion release? Maybe getting one extra documentary? Is that worth not getting a blu-ray for The Thin Man, Red Beard, The Pianist, The Lady Eve, or any number of other classics that still have no high definition release?

No, it's not.

Disney now has the rights to this film, and we all know how much they love a buck. I wouldn't be surprised to see a super duper collector's issue with all sorts of bells and whistles. In the mean time, Criterion, with their comparatively limited resources, just doesn't need to be issuing The Shape of Water. Not when a year old, fantastic release already exists.

I agree with this. And the same could probably be said about Rebecca and Notorious. Admittedly, I have not watched either of those Criterion releases, but I own the MGM Blu-Ray releases and both of them are quite good. Did we really need these released again by Criterion? Or would we have been better served with releases of titles that have not yet made it to any format?

With that said, I still plan on getting Criterion's Rebecca release, as this is one of my favorite movies. But I haven't felt the need to do so yet.

Yes, they did. The MGM releases were OOP for years; going for high prices. Disney own the rights to the three films, MGM had a license for Selznick titles, and they’re terrible with catalog releases; we most likely would of never seen a re-release from them.

Rebecca and Notorious don't bother me because the blu-rays that were issued are no longer available unless you want to pay an exorbitant rate for a standard release. Out-of-print films is a whole other ball of wax.

I have no issue with re-releasing an important film from the past few years (and yes, I understand the term "important" is somewhat relative) if it substantially improves upon the original. If the first had an abysmal transfer for some reason, or had virtually nothing in the way of supplemental enhancements, that's one thing. But a movie with a great blu-ray just doesn't need another. Would I buy a Casablanca or Double Indemnity Criterion blu-ray release? In a New York minute, even though I've got the Casablanca boxed set (and the single release), and the remastered Double Indemnity release. That's how much I love those two movies. And, if the Masters of Cinema UK issue of Wilder's noir masterpiece has even a single notable extra that mine doesn't, I'll grab that, too. Hell, I'll probably grab the UK steelbooks just for display pieces.

But, am I ever going to campaign for Criterion to release either one? Not a chance.

I did not realize that they were OOP. Given that, I would agree that Criterion releases were needed.

Casablanca is one of my favorite films. I only own it on HD DVD and the PQ is excellent. But yeah, if Criterion released an "upgrade" I'd grab it.

Default this has all been said before, but...

This all makes me think of Blue Velvet and FWWM. When Criterion announced BV, you could get the current Blu for around $6. I know they are remastering it, but it's still one that is readily available. I'm all over this release BTW. Can't knock a great film with an upgraded presentation.

Then there is Fire Walk With Me. This is the only solo release of it in North America. There was a lot of complaining about this one, I mean it's true that most of us already owned the Twin Peaks set that included it, but that didn't mean everyone did.

I don't mind re-releases, especially when they add some value to it with a new restoration or remaster. But it's silly to think these releases are preventing other films from being released. Some just take a long time to get right, like Detour. I really liked the history of how they went about restoring it.

Plus let us not forget the almighty dollar. These re-releases of more popular titles help guarantee the possibility of releasing a title that has yet to be given the HD treatment, especially ones that aren't quite as popular.

I don't know. I own The Shape of Water on 4K and I also have the Best Buy exclusive steelbook and the limited edition lenticular edition. I would still buy the Criterion if they ever released it. If Criterion only released movies that don't already have a Blu-ray release of some kind, then they're going to become more niche than they already are (niche = not a great plan for long term business).
