1.55 firmware available. When 820 turned on it asked if I wanted to update.

https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com...0/ub420_us.htm

-Playability of Blu-ray Disc™
-Add function of "System Gamma" and "HDR10 Metadata" (for UB820)

That's fantastic they added the missing features to the lower model!

Panasonic you BASTARDS. I got rid of the 820 because I had zero need for broken Dolby Vision and figured that they would never, ever officially add (or should I say unlock) any of the features from the 9000, they've not done anything like that before. Gah.

What feature are they adding? I won’t be home for another week so I can’t check.

The ability to actually identify the metadata on the disc, OPPOs just do min/max mastering display but the 9000 does MaxCLL and MaxFALL as well (if present on the disc, not all studios include those two figures). I actually thought about getting a 9000 solely for that feature until sense got the better of me, so I'm pissed that they've added it to the 820 after I got rid of my one!

Cool. I was just asking about that feature the other day because I bought the 820 not realising it was locked on that model. And hey presto.

I always thought that feature is in the 820. How does it do HDR Optimizer otherwise?

Happy to see our requested firmware update version 1.55 come out, but we still do not have the UB9000's exclusive 350Nit projector tone mapping HDR Optimizer choice. What ver. 1.55 adds are two items.

1st is the System Gamma Adjustment and the 2nd upgrade is the ability to show the HDR10 Metadata display.

Here's two slides that Panasonic HQ and JVC sent me that best explains the updates. Unfortunately, the 350Nit HDR Optimizer that reproduces the best color fidelity, color volume and color saturation remains an exclusive for UB9000 owners only.

The slide below explains the advantages of the 500Nit and 350Nit HDR Optimizer settings and how they effect the image performance on JVC's NX7 and NX9 projectors.

You're misunderstanding what we're talking about. Any Panny with the Optimiser is READING the accordant metadata, even the 420, but it was only the 9000 that had the ability to actually SHOW what the metadata figures are to the end user. Now that's been added to the 820, and I see no reason whatsoever why it couldn't be officially added to the 420, apart from Panasonic being douchebags of course.

Geoff the firmware says 420 too. Did your player give you the option to update?
What’s strange is the update says US but they don’t sell the 420 here that I’m aware of.

Edit: The link to the firmware has been removed. Perhaps there was a bug or an error??......Nevermind, was placed on Global site——

Clark, it literally says (for UB820) after that feature in the firmware update. I'm not saying that the 420 hasn't been updated as well, I'm saying that only the 'playability of disc' part applies to that player.

For the UB9000, we're getting a firmware update to support Control4 IP programming codes.

I also expect we'll have further firmware updates with IP and IR discrete codes to follow and user settings for the idle player power down.

You’re absolutely correct. I missed that amended note for the 820. My apologies.

Just in case: I've updated the 420 to 1.55 and no, it doesn't have the view metadata function.

Just succefully downloaded and installed the latest firmware on my 820.

I'm eager to try the System Gamma setting and see what kind of effect it will have in conjunction with my projector. Won't be able to do this until tomorrow evening at the earliest though. Gotta go to work first and then after that will have to wait til it's completely dark outside.

I noticed there's a screensaver function. Has this always been there or is that new as well because I don't seem to remember that?

Updated! 5 part update, so it takes a bit longer.

Aquaman

Now maybe next they can unlock image tweaks to Dolby Vision.

No, now all you need to do is go through every Universal, Warners and Sony title and tell me what the metadata says.

Seriously though, I've got a lot of that info already (rips often tend to have the metadata info, not that I download them, I just copy down the metadata info and put it in my spreadsheet) but I'm still looking to find out what the Ghostbusters movies are reading for the metadata, not just the two older movies but the newer one as well. Can anyone help a Geoffy out?

That would be a great thread, to just post metadata and update for every new release. I'll try to list Ghostbusters tonight.

What does having the metadata do for you? Asking for a friend.
