Hi everyone. I'm new to projectors and have spent the past few weeks researching options. I posted in another thread, posing a question on pairing Carl's ALR screen material with the Optoma UHD50. My post was on an older thread and for obvious reasons didn't receive any responses. Since then I have done more research and have come up with what look to be better options.
I am seriously ocd and will dig for all the info I can and then spend more time weighing options before I settle on a choice. I really like the looks of the Optoma UHD60 but I'm thinking the UHD50 makes more sense for me given its lower cost and, as far as I can tell from reviews, pretty solid performance. The new 4K DLC units appear to produce a stunning picture that would suit me just fine. The only issue I see is with contrast and black level, coming from a Samsung 65" 4K with very good contrast. I already know that a 100" projector screen will put the 65" panel in the dust for impact. I just don't want to give up too much contrast and black level in the trade. That is where the ALR screen comes in. Today I was looking at the options from Elite Screens. Their Cinegrey 3D and 5D both look like they would serve my purposes very well. The only real issue I see is with throw ratio and the limited space in my HT room. My Room is 11'9" deep. The closest I can place the lense is about 10' 7" or so from the screen. Elite states a minimum throw ratio of 1.5 for both the 3D and 5D. I'm guessing the narrow reflective angle of the material would be the reason for this. The 5D has a tighter reflective angle and would probably be the less forgiving of the two. But I wonder if the 3D might let me get away with the shorter throw. Seating in the HT room is limited to straight in front of the screen so that isn't an issue. I just want to know what my chances are of avoiding hot spots and achieving good uniformity. Am I way off base here? What are my chances that this pairing might work? What other options might anyone suggest? |
