Idk if it was a Kubrick boxset with all the films scanned in 4K with all new supplements never seen before I don’t think anyone would complain.

You know I didn't hear any complaints when they released three Divine movies before their next Chaplin release.

My complaint was it wasn’t enough Divine movies!

Criterion has a Divine problem, it’s not Divine enough!

Lol that'd go over well here. I honestly couldn't think of any though...Fiend Without a Face certainly could've flourished on MST3K, maybe Equinox.

Why a box set? Why can't I just buy the ones I want.

I can't say that I'm remotely interested in this, but I'm happy for those people who are fans and are excited by this. Obviously, not every release is going to please every collector. So it goes. Nothing wrong with that.

Right, because people have the exact same tastes as you do.

I suppose I could just go to their website but I'd rather hear from those with experience.
I've placed quite a few direct orders - all individual releases, plus the Hitchcock set which is four titles in a slip case.

I've always received "factory fresh" copies, and have never had a problem. However, the packaging has always been "basic" with the titles loose in a cardboard box with maybe some brown parcel paper as filler (I don't know if Criterion does something different for larger box sets).

Overall I've been very happy.

Edit: I can't answer about release date arrival, as I typically buy during the flash sales.

The Godzilla films are not originally in English, I figured the movie snobs who usually buy Criterion releases would automatically jerk off over the box set based on that alone. Subtitles = automatic pretentiousness.

People being upset by this seem to forget that Criterion has always put out "schlock." Shit release 100 is a Beastie Boys music video anthology (which I proudly own)

What happened to that guy that posted the Godzilla gif after every announcement?

He must be on cloud 9 today.

Very interested in which film might be getting a UHD by the end of the year if the rumor from Digital Bits is correct. Do they go with an evergreen title (The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus, Days of Heaven, etc) or something contemporary (Grand Budapest Hotel, Roma) ?

I don't mean to be rude, but I think the clamour on this board for 4k discs is much louder than the actual real-world market demand. I don't say this just because I don't own a 4K player, but I don't think I even know anyone who has one / buys 4k discs. The market for physical media is already relatively small compared to a decade ago. ...and the market for 4k discs is just a sliver of that. That's just reality.

LOL @ the people dismissing Criterion for releasing genre films, forgetting that this is the same company that released (on Blu-ray, DVD, and/or Laserdisc) The Blob, Night of the Living Dead, Carnival of Souls, the original Godzilla, many John Waters films, RoboCop, Halloween, Akira, Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Sisters, This Is Spinal Tap, King Kong, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Ghostbusters, Forbidden Planet, and of course Armageddon. If a film contributes to pop culture as much as these films have, they’re absolutely “worthy” of the collection.

Trust me, someone would.

"These are already on Blu-ray and the current transfers look great."

"I didn't like Eyes Wide Shut."

"The second half of Full Metal Jacket is crap."

"I'm happy about these but don't want a box set. Wish these had gotten individual releases because I don't like [insert Kubrick movie here]."

"These are cool but shouldn't be Spine #1000. That should've gone to Ishtar or No Holds Barred."

I could go on and on, but I'm pretty sure I've accurately captured what the negative reactions in this thread (and elsewhere) would have been.

Just placed my order direct from Criterion for the Godzilla set. Sure, I might be paying more than if I waited for the BN Sale but with the stock issues they had last year with the Bergman set I don't want to have to wait a few months for the second pressing and I'm super happy to pay $179.99+tax. Plus, it will help me from going overboard ordering titles in September as I can be inclined to do.

That's a good point. You'd think he'd be the first to respond. Reminds me of my High School graduation. They had a special award for a student that had perfect attendance all 4 years, and when they called her name, she wasn't at the ceremony. It was priceless
