Default Thanks!

Just wanted to thank you guys for this forum and the "how to" guide on replacing the blu-ray laser.... I have an 80gig that stopped reading discs so I replace the blu-ray as directed and the thing works great! I do notice a little more noise though like I can hear the laser moving back and forth on the disc sometimes.... did I tighted down something too much or should I not worry about it. It works fine just never noticed that laser seeking on the disc sometimes.

Edit: After listening to one of my other PS3's I could here the blu-ray seeking so I guess I never noticed it before.... The guide is great! Thanks again.

So anyone have any experience with the flashing red light on start-up? I had the PS3 (60 GB) on for more than 24 hours either playing games or doing F@H with a fan on it constantly. I was listening to the music that the F@H was playing and then it stopped and I looked at it and the PS3 had a flashing red light. I turned it off and then back on. It started with the green light and then a few seconds later and then the flashing red light.

Well there is a possibility that you didn't tighten everything properly. I once had an issue after taking it apart and putting it back together that I heard additional noise that I didn't notice before and after I re-tightened all of the screws it went away.

Hmmm. Might have to brace myself for a potential OPU replacement.

I lent Wild Hog (yeach) and The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy to a friend and it wouldn't play on his still-under-warranty PS3. Tried them on mine and Hog played but Hitchiker's stuck at the "prep" menu. It could be a firmware issue. Other discs and games play on it though.

Crossing my fingers it's not the PS3!!

I am having a similar issue as Chanandler Bong above.

I have an original 60 gig. My son was playing Rock Band 2 and the machine just stopped mid-game and went to a flashing red light. It won't boot and when you hit the power button the light goes green/yellow for a split second then goes to flashing red again. I understand that this is generally associated with an overheating issue but the machine was quite cool. Regardless, I unplugged it let it sit for a few hours and took care of other things around the house and came back to it later. Again, no change. It won't boot and I hear it start to whirr then a click, then nothing. Guessing that it maybe a HD issue and since I had planned on buying a new HD anyway, I went out and got a new drive and put it in. No effect, same issue. As I said it is an orignal 60 gig and was sent in once under warranty for a new BR drive. Other than that it has worked great. I'll bite the bullet to send it back as I like the 60 gig features so this is kind of my 'last ditch' effort to see if there may be a simple and cheaper solution that I have overlooked.

If not, how can I get the RB2 disc out if I can't boot it before sending it in?

As always, many thanks for any help or insight you may have.

You are correct with it typically being a hard drive issue causing this, but it sounds like its more of an internal issue with it.

Have you tried powering on the PS3 by holding down the power button for several seconds until it beeps?

From what I've heard that when you send in your PS3 for maintenance, they mail back to you whatever disc was inside the PS3.

Okay, my problem, thankfully, is not the PS3. It's the disc.

But there's no scratch on it. Nothing to indicate there's fault. It wouldn't play on Panasonic's BD50 but it did play stutteringly on a Samsung 1400. I can't figure out the problem. Wiped the disc clean with microfiber cloth and all, and the disc still looks pristine...

I wouldn't mind if the problem exists for Wild Hog but for Hitchiker... ARGH!

I tried holding the button and it just initiates another boot attempt which gets me the green/yellow quick flash then flashing red. Once it is flashing red I hold it down and it gets me back to a solid red.

Again, thanks for the help. I am going to go ahead with sending it in. I'll post an update once they tell me the issue.

I was trying to transfer photos from a usb drive last night to my 60gb PS3. It had trouble reading the photos but evenytually worked. Then a few hours later I was playing ENDWAR, and it just stopped and power shut off it self. Now when I turn it on, I get nothing. Green light for a sec, then the yellow light flashes and shuts off again. It won't eject the game either. HELP!!!!! Guess what? Warranty was over a year ago! They yellow light of death...Ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Okay, I'm a first time poster here, and I feel a little shy. lol.

I bought a used ps3 from ebay that was only said to be missing the hard drive. When I got it and installed my own hdd, the blu-ray drive didn't work. It wouldn't spin discs. So, thinking that the obvious problem is the mechanism, I bought a new one and put it in. Little did I know that it was more likely the laser.

Anyway, I replaced the mechanism and put everything back together, but now the drive won't take discs. I used the video and points in this post, but I can't figure out the issue. When the drive is opened, all the parts move as they should, but when I replace the top and try to push a disc through, the white arms on the top half move only slightly, then stop. I don't know for sure if this mechanism was the issue, but I can't even test it at this point.

Any tips? I'm getting close to buying a full, working drive and replacing it.

Tips other than my video? Not really. Its very difficult to pin point whats wrong with it because you bought a used non-working PS3 as you do not know what possibly has happened to it. Maybe the person opened it to took a few parts out of something.

Its really difficult to give more advice on getting your Blu-ray drive to work other than watching both of the videos.

Well, the drive didn't quite "work" when I got it, but it did at least take the discs, it just didn't spin them. Now that I've gone in and replaced the mechanism, it doesn't take discs. So, I know that it should be in working order, and it has to be something I did in the repair process.

So you've watched my video on how to fix the drive (not laser) correct? Does your drive do everything that mine does properly?

Well, I've watched the video on what a working drive should look like and do. My drive does all of those things, and appears as if it should be in working order, but once I close it back up and put a disc in, the white arms on top seem stuck.

I considered sending it back to Sony in the beginning, and just having them fix it for me, but I've heard that they'll sometimes give you a different factory refurb instead of your system, and I don't want to give up my 60GB because of the backwards compatibility.

Hrm... if its the white arms on top, make sure they look identical to mine in every way before you close it.

They do. They move and work fine when the drive is open, but when I close it again is when they stop. Like something isn't agreeing on the bottom, but I don't know what it could be.

Don't know what I did, but it's started taking discs again. I must have re-set something or other when I opened it the last time. I dunno, but at least it's working again.

All of this, and it still didn't spin or read the disc, so I know it's the laser now. Now I've got a spare kem-400aaa deck, and need a new laser, and I'll have to do all of that over again.

Ugh, it'll be worth it, though. Thanks for the help, Mike. I'll be back around, I'm sure.

My PS3 got the red light. It starts green, then goes yellow then quickly to red. It seems that the fan died but I'm not sure.

Any DIY fixes, Mike?

Warranty had expired about six months ago and even if it's still covered, I couldn't get it repaired by the warranty (PS3 is the US version).

UPDATE: I put my ear close to the PS3 before powering it up (and getting the red light) and I could hear the fan turning. Then I get yellow, red and three beeps. So the fan is running and then, nada.
