My first DVD player was a Sony from I believe 1997. It went for $500, and I believe may have been the step-child of the S7000. I recall one of the differences was that mine just had a plain drawer from the main face plate, where as the S7000 had a slide down panel to expose the drawer.

When I built my dedicated HT in 2004, I went with the new Denon 2900. Then upgraded to the Oppo (BDP-83) blu-ray player with separate line-outs to go with my older Denon 5803 receiver.

Oppo BDP-83 and Denon 5803 still going strong, knock on wood, as well as my original M&K 150 speaker setup. The only thing I had to replace since 2004 was my initial Sharp 10K projector which developed a "sharp" color wheel whine after only six years. It was replaced with a Sony VPL-HW10.

Yep, great range those.

I used to swear by Sony, Pioneer and Technics (for my audio).

The Sony S735D had a beautiful brushed metal finish and the smoothest disc drawer I have ever known. It also had a chunky but elegant remote with a jog shuttle to advance frame by frame. Came in handy for certain types of film.

It also had a screen grab function to use as wallpaper/background. Hours of fun!

Like yourself, I passed it on to a family member. It’s still going strong.

So, what is your opinion on the best “affordable” UHD player Wendell? I’ve had a couple of Sony BDP-BX510 and my Xbox One(not S or X) as my BD players, but have gotten some pushback when considering a standalone player that cost the same as a new game console. Plus, I’m a little apprehensive to pick up a new player giving I can’t create a solid viewing area in our house. Hell, my barely used Onkyo HT-S5300 is in its box in the hall closet going to waste.

With you, everything always ends badly. You're just a bitter aging cynic scared of any and all change. You want everyone to be scared with you and it ticks you off that none of us will join your doomsday cult of unseen, silent, and imaginary supporters.

The also insist that they are right. You are in such good company.

After 9 years and counting of your being wrong, time has already spoken. Expecting to receive the benefit of the doubt until the stars fall from the heavens is not going to happen. You don't get credit for a long track record of being entirely wrong.

Predictions that fail to occur year after year after year lessen credibility; they do not increase it. Constantly extending the due date for your imaginary cataclysms only compounds the folly and attests to how obsessed you are. You began with having no credibility right from the start when you made your first loony prediction those many years ago. You can't build upon a foundation (credibility) that doesn't exist by being perennially wrong.
Only a coward would backtrack on such comments now. I’m all in. I don’t have the same faith in the upcoming generation that you guys have in relation to HT or indeed film.

Carry on with this lazy, troll accusations. You really seemed to have latched onto that since Donster labelled me that. You are both hypocrites. Anyone reading through this thread can see that.

Some of you guys really disappoint me with your sheep like behaviour. Just because a person’s views are different, they are trolls? I deny such accusations and always will.

As a media player that Panasonic he has is the pits, I had 2 similar Panasonic models. The last one I had would play files from a sever with 3 different methods, 1 was fair, 1 was so-so and 1 was a proverbial pain. Their IP control sucked and continues to do so, the last Android update was 2012, don’t remember about Apple. A HDD connected to the USB port does not qualify as a sever and probably limited to 2TB in size for these older models.

That Local Server I used was a long time ago in Palm Desert, CA. When I build my computers I only use SuperMicro MB's, so the Server was an old Workstation running Windows 7 it might have been even Windows 95 when I started, and I added some HDD's then put it on my Network. I used a GoVideo Networked DVD Player, that could access the VOB Files. I just used the Windows Filing System, Files and Folders. Very basic name the Movie and name the Folder. The VOB DVD Files Streamed good, but the Blu-ray Files would buffer. Here in Utah I didn't Stream from my Servers, just Streaming Providers.

Isn’t that something you said in another digital/physical thread after this thread was temporarily shutdown, but quickly deleted it? Maybe because you knew your ass would be new mower grass if any of the mod squad was keeping tabs. So careful who go calling coward, hero

Actually, a sane rational person would do just that, but who has ever accused you of being one? You don't have faith in much of anything; according to you everything is a lost cause.

While there are none better to recognize hypocrisy than a consummate hypocrite like yourself, you are wrong to include us among your ilk. What people see from reading this thread is how absolutely certifiably you are.

Comparing your behavior to that of a troll may not be original, but it is apt. You repeatedly post the same disproven garbage in order to illicit a response. Exactly as would any garden variety troll. You just want to be the center of attention, even if that attention is less than flattering.

Different ideas are not what you post. All you do is repost the same repackaged ludicrous predictions where you crazily claim that all we enjoy is irrevocably doomed. Your posts are as worthless as they are pointless except for the laughter that they cause.

Disagreeing with you does not a sheep make; it means that the lucid among us refute your BS wherever we encounter it. You don't even have sheep to publicly support your posts because even your imaginary "supporters" have more shame than you do.

Wouldn't all of your inherent hot air be put to more personally satisfying use by inflating yourself a nice blow-up companion? I wouldn't want you to have to spend money on a real one when you have a trip to save up for and all.

Everyone in this entire forum posts for a reaction of some sort. That’s not troll behaviour. You are wrong and I know you are wrong because I know why I post.

The vacation? Well, I’m going with a lady friend so no blow up companions required!

Getting back on topic, what was everyone’s first experience of HD film wise?

Mine was Apocalypto on Bluray. Cracking film and the transfer was a good one. The jungle looked lush.

Unlike some, I have the upmost respect for the mods. I think you should read my posts. I said I would be a coward if I backtracked.

I do, too. They had the good taste to suspend you in the past.

Not that I would want that, mind you. Your madness is divinely comedic even if unintentionally so.

Twice in 9 years.

Have you watched TP yet? Or are you waiting for the launch of a 16K format before resuming?
