Maybe now Barbara Stanwyck can get some love. I truly hope Criterion’s release of Forty Guns is just the beginning. Stella Dallas, Baby Face, Ball of Fire, and an upgrade to The Lady Eve would be fantastic. Other films like The Strange Love of Martha Ivers and The Bitter Tea of General Yenl ( MoD? Really, Sony) needs an improved release desperately. Missy could do it all, and her work is woefully underrepresented on blu-Ray. Here’s hoping the studios will, at long last, give fans a catalogue worthy of her immense talent.
Also an upgrade of The Furies!

Amen to that!

I watched it for the first time ever two nights ago - although the DVD is acceptable, it should look better in HD and without the annoying windowboxing.

Warner's 2009 blu-ray of Wizard of Oz was based on a 4K restoration sourced from an 8K scan. It may not have been a frequent thing, but it was a thing.

I'm no expert, but from various posts on this site I've read it seems to be a combination of significant financial troubles, lack of interest in releasing catalog titles on BD (allegedly a policy that if a film had a DVD release, then that's it), and a reluctance to license films to other entities. Seems some things may be slowly changing according to some recent comments I've seen.

How often do B&N sales happen? Would it be better to order the Godzilla set from amazon or just wait for another sale then order it then?

Twice a year. July and November. Question is do you want the first printing since we don't know how high demand will be and its might be like the Bergman Cinema set where people had to wait a long time for the second printing or can you wait possibly till the February flash sale at Criterion.

Yeah, the long and the short of it is that they're broke.

Their tendency to sit on their catalog titles is probably a result of that too. Not only do they not have tons of cash to throw at restorations they might have also been worried that licensing those titles could make selling the whole company less appealing to potential buyers.

And yeah, the recent cracks in the ice are very welcome. Anything that gets me a BD of Addams Family Values is good news in my book

I believe, if anything, a Disney-Criterion relationship may further develop if Disney decides to continue allowing Criterion to license Fox-owned titles. If anyone can convince a Hollywood studio to lend out their films, it's Criterion. I think we can all agree that Criterion-licensed BDs of films like Swiss Family Robinson would make the world a better place

I think we will continue to see Fox catalog titles in the Criterion Collection, though I wouldn't get your hopes up of Disney licensing anything from the Disney library though

The one November release I'm looking forward to seeing is NOW, VOYAGER. I saw it a long time ago on Turner Classic Movies, so I'm anxious to see how the new 4K restoration will turn out.

Speaking of, a few days ago, I had a dream Criterion released Disney's animation catalog from 1937 to 1967. IT was so wonderful, all the extras on each gift, the promise of corrections on each movie for the best quality and proper colors for all, and I was just about to put in Cinderella when I woke up...

I haven't seen either of these yet. I'm still working my way through her vast filmography, and I don't recall seeing these on TCM in a while.

The Lady Eve appears in a French Preston Sturges blu-ray box set released in 2017, Preston Sturges: King of Comedy, and per Critikat, the six films are restored. So they found elements well enough to release on blu-ray. Why couldn't Criterion?

As far as I understand it, A “second printing” would only happen if there needed to be a correction, i.e. Dressed to Kill

Now, Voyager and Betty Blue are day ones for me. I appreciate All About Eve and already own the U.K. release of Cold War.

“Restored” could also be, most likely, that they just slapped the DVD-era master on disc.

Though, if only one Disney feature could be licensed, Fantasia would be a perfect match for Criterion.

One can only hope that some of these DMC exclusives eventually get proper editions. Films like Treasure Island, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, and The Black Hole deserve better.
