No, it was definitely not an upconvert - I can tell you that for sure. There WAS detail that wasn't there before. Aside from cropping issues on scope films, I find TNT-HD is one of the better HD channels.

The Ultra DVD master was pretty detailed to begin with--
(Check out the restoration featurette on the 2-3 disk set from a couple years ago: "The Tin Man's got a rivet on the bridge of his nose!...We've never seen that before until now!")

Since Turner=Warner, it's likely they showed that, but as far as actual 1080p Blu, we have only the disk itself to wait for until we know for certain whether it's been committed to Real Blu yet.

The high quaility of the DVD is the reason why I'm excited for the Blu. If the DVD is that freakin good, then the Blu should (I hope ) be epic.

Note: On that same featurette, they said they restored the film at 4k resolution, not 1920x1080. How did 1920x1080 get linked to the resolution?

It makes sense that they release it in the last quarter. December seems so far away.

If I am correct this is usually when TBS or TNT runs it on a 24 loop. They do the same thing with Christmas Story. If I am not mistaken the Wizard of Oz is played a day or two after Christmas on one of those channels.

Default How about the Wizard of OZ

I don't like many older movies but this one is a classic of course. Any hints that a Blu-ray of this film would be available in 2009?

Does anyone with the DVD know if it was widescreen movie or 4:3 only (I can't remember if when I saw it on TV those 10 times or so over the years, if it had black bars on top or not)....

It's going to come out at some point this year (no date announced yet) and it is a 4:3 film.

I'm assuming these thread pages exist independently of each other--
So the reasons why Warner's date would likely be August '09, have, for all essential purposes, not been posted in this thread yet.

Default Gone With The Wind & The Wizard Of Oz Available for Pre-order on Amazon

Gone with the Wind & The Wizard Of Oz are finally available for pre-order on Amazon. Even if they are not coming out until the end of year, it is a good sign things are in the works.
I hope these two movies are done justice on Blu Ray. Can't wait...

The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] (1939) Sept 29

Gone with the Wind (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

It's awesome that this is up for pre-order but as someone else said... they are Ultimate Editions which mean $60!!

I get it. These are classic, top-notch films (along with Casablanca) but why doesn't WB issue stand alone editions of the blu-ray along with these editions? Aside from a handful of suckers, the only people buying these editions are hard-core fans or collectors who would still buy this if a stand alone edition were also made available.

Give me a $25 stand alone and I'll buy it but I won't be putting out mega-bucks for these bulky editions with a lot of fluff.

True, they are trying to milk every penny out of them. I want the movies, but I refuse to pay 3x as much for additional cardboard. I am still waiting for a regular edition of Casablanca.

Given the choice I do prefer standard size boxes. And I do want the most bonuses but only when in the digital realm. I can live without the books and zany objects

But when I have no choice, I'll buy whichever available edition of a great film.

I am definitely not thrilled about spending mega money on special editions. I bought the most recent collector's editions of these on DVD two years ago.

But I don't know how long we will have to wait for the standard editions to come out, so I will probably end up buying them. I hope they have some decent extras on them. Most likely it be will extras already available on the previous DVD versions though.

Casablanca is my all-time favorite movie but I have refused to buy the (now) $42 collector's edition. Most of the fluff in the Casablanca set is stuff that I don't want (luggage tags, passport holder, postcards) and so I refuse to buy it.

Also, have you taken a look at the sheer size of the Casablanca package? It's GIGANTIC! I imagine much of the same fluff will be in with Oz.

Like you, I've been holding out hope that a stand alone Casablanca would be on it's way. The super duper package came out Dec. 2nd so I'm going to wait a bit longer before I cave in.

Alright now, nobody get excited. These listings have been on Amazon, with the very same doctored images, for several months now. I remember there being threads on these very same items a few months back, and they were no more real then than they are at this time. Seriously, every once in a while someone will come along and try to get everyone excited by these listings but they are not real until a real date has been announced by Warner Bros.

Here's a link to a thread started by someone back in January and in it a poster says the same listings were up in 2008.

I get what you're saying but The Wizard of Oz has NOT had a price listing up on that page before. The cover art was updated a month or so ago but the ability to actually pre-order for $59.99 was not an option.
