Can someone explain in simple term's what the model number means?

Such as a AVR-1709 or an AVR 1508 and maybe an AVR2309 and AVR3808.

I'm not asking about the listed ones, just using them as example's. I am guessing that the last number(or last two) is the model year, but what category to place the first two number in.

I wanted to get an Onkyo 606 for the bedroom, but I’m thinking about having something different with variety in my life.
