It will never be the only option for viewing movies, so it remains a tempest in a teacup adversely affecting no one.
You mean you hope it isn’t the only option.

Crazy, right?
Once again, presuming you will always have the option of watching films the way you like (aka normal speed)

I won't always have that option. I am, after all, going to die one of these days.

At which point my options vis-a-vis film watching - and pretty much everything else - will become considerably more limited.

But until then, no, I am not too terribly concerned about Big Streaming forcing me to watch films at variable speeds.

We will always have the option to watch movies at normal speed. (Even in the afterlife, Octagon; I asked my Magic 8 Ball, so we're good.) We will even be able to watch them on our honking big ass TVs or projector screens while, get this, sitting down!!!

Back in the day of LaserDisc I procured several titles in CAV mode which cost a good bit more than CLV disc of the same title. The CAV disc allowed me to play the disc at multiple speeds, forward or reverse, do loops, etc.

In this case, having hope would imply that I had some doubt. I have no doubt, thus I need no hope.

No one is ever going to make anyone watch movies sped up, period.

Yep, I still got me some of those CAV laserdiscs. They cost substantially more, but they sure delivered a nicer still image as they paused on the exact frame. Only 30 minutes playback per side, though.

Attention spans are fine back then though. Now we have social media, smart phones, Twitch, streaming video, podcasts, gaming, gaming broadcasts, watch parties, audiobooks, tinder, websites, AR games like Pokemon Go, music streaming etc..

They're fine now, too. Repeating falsehoods does not transform them into the truth.

It is the state of the rest of your brain that is cause for concern. You've got obsession and paranoia down pat, so your attention span is okay if nothing else is.

We have always had lots of leisure activities competing for our free time and attention. The only difference now is that you dislike many of the options, so you demonize them every chance that you get along with anyone that partakes of them.

Are you sure about that? Don't you remember all the hand wringing and doomsaying in the 80s? Video might have been killing the radio star but MTV was going to kill attention spans. All those two-three minute videos with their quick cuts and rapid editing were going to create a generation of ADD-numbed zombies.

Those damn kids just didn't stand a chance.

Hey, wait a second...you were one of those damned kids, weren't you?

How'd you hold up?

You've never tried to take one of those screens away from an allegedly attention span impaired little kid, have you?

We can certainly discuss whether staring at a phone or tablet for hours on end is healthy for a little kid but it's hard to call their attention spans into question.

I don't have kids myself but my nieces and nephews can stare at those freaking things for literally hours on end.

Kind of like me and a TV, I guess.

Well, without the cigars.

More options is a good thing, not a bad one. Pretty much everyone besides you sees it that way.

Case in point: more movies in my library is a great thing. I added It's A Wonderful Life and The Wizard Of Oz on 4k disc to my collection. Ah, I still remember when flyry would tease us about the former only being in 4K digitally. Well, not any more. The real 4K edition has arrived!

Are you really criticizing AR games when you clamp a VR headset onto your big melon for who knows long or how often? I feel that word "H" word leaping to the tip of my tongue.

You use many of the other things that you listed there, too, but you must have some kind of immunity to their brain rotting effects as there's no more room for any more crazy inside your head.

It's not a new option. The PlayStation 3 can playback at 1.5 speed with pitch corrected audio. It came out 13 years ago and was the most popular Blu-ray player in the world for quite a few years.

I have one of those! I have lived with that devil device all these years and never knew the danger that I was in! My attention span coulda collapsed like the Bridge Over The River Krackpot! It must be the strength of my unwavering willpower and my fine character that saved me from this vilest of temptations.

Not when that option is speeding through content at 1.5. That is not a good option at all, period.

Then don't use that option. See how easy that was?

It makes me feel sick that the option could even be there in the first place. It’s only encouraging a certain behaviour pattern that could impact the future.
