I will certainly be purchasing the Theatrical Editions. And, unless there is a vast number of differences between the extras on the EE DVD and BD (in 2012), I won't be purchasing the EE BDs.

You know, I said I wasn't gonna get the TEs, but if the price is decent I might just change my mind.

Personally, I'm glad they cut him. He never seemed to "fit" the tone of the series, IMHO. Honestly, whenever I read the books, I tend to skim over the Bombadil chapters. He bugs me. I think he would have fit in fine in The Hobbit, but not LOTR. All IMO of course.

That said, I bet they use him in the bridge movie or The Hobbit 2 or whatever they're calling it. If they do, I admit to being curious at how well they pull him off on screen.

I can live with my EE DVD's for a bit longer... I'm definitely getting the TE's when they come out.

How do the EE DVDs look on upconverting BD players? How about as compared to the 1080i airings on TNT, etc., which look great?

If you count the PS3, they do look a little sharper to me on my setup... However someone else with a standalone upconverting player should have addtional comments...

I thought they looked great, absolutely no complaints. And if you are into the extras and movie making process the disks will blow you away.

No, I'm sorry. I have the EE DVDs. I'm wondering how they look on an upcoverting BD player so that maybe I have no desire to upgrade to the BD versions.

Again, the versions shown on TNT-HD are beautiful. If that's as good as the DVDs on an upcoverting player, I may not upgrade.

I suppose the only concern would be that TNT doesn't preserve the aspect ration (2.40 vs. 1.85) when broadcast. Other than that, the picture quality IMO is slightly better on the broadcast versus the Upconverted SD. But those EE DVDs are one of the best you can buy, both in terms of PQ, Audio and more-so bonus content. The EE discs house the best bonus content for any feature to date.

The EE DVD's don't look outstanding, but they look good. In my opinion, the Star Wars trilogy looks much better on my PS3.

Ever since HD, forget any SD being considered "outstanding", but they are certainly one of the best you will find for SD (StarWars certainly included in that list).

Upconverted DVDs will never be "good enough" if there is a blu-ray available as an alternative. Upconversion can only do so much. Interpolation isn't added data.

Amen to that the LOTR Extends plus the Star Wars Saga would equal blu ray gold!

As much as I want these now too, releasing them now they would actually pull in less dollars than if the economy was healthy. It doesn't really make sense now. They can make more money on them when we are on an upswing and when there is a higher installed user base.

More bang for their buck.

That's exactly why I think Lucas is waiting but that is neither here nor there. I don't like LoTR as much as I did before 2005 but I will still be getting all 3 blu-rays ASAP

I have the Samsung 1500 and I have to agree with that also. The EE DVD's look ok but nothing extraordinary, Star Wars look's very good on upscale, make's you wonder what the BD will be like.

Well, considering they decided to give each film four commentaries, I find it hard to believe that compression artifacts aren't an issue. Take an hr and a half-two hrs video content, It can look really good, but add in about 6 audio tracks, two being multi-channel, and one being DTS, and you don't have a lot of space to spare.
