I’m in the same frame of mind with ProfessorWho, wishing Criterion would work on A. movies with no BD release, or B. better releases if it’s already on BD. For example give Wes Anderson in 4K if the studio’s bluray release is already competent, for instance Grand Budapest Hotel or Moonrise Kingdom. Making us double dip for mostly the same movie encode and some better features doesn’t improve the basic movie experience. To me it’s probably 90% movie (or higher) and 10% features quality, no matter how many features or length.
4K is the current exemplary home movie experience. Criterion needs to grow and expand into that experience. |

I missed out on the Scream Factory release. I mean it's Criterion so you know it's going to be outstanding. My only worry is that they put it in book form packaging like they did Godzilla.

Add me to the camp who would love to see Game of Death II on a US BD, even if it is not through Criterion.
One thing I'm really hoping for is better/fixed audio mixes on Game of Death. The audio issues with Shout's editions of the movie haven't gotten much attention. Their DTS-HD 5.1 mix has been raised an octave (from a PAL speed-up, since it matches the HK Legends DVD) and their DTS-HD Stereo mix is badly muffled (like the Fortune Star DVDs). Only the lossy Dolby Digital track sounds as it should. |

The muffled mono issues also affect the Mandarin mono tracks for Fist of Fury and Way of the Dragon (and assorted other Fortune Star titles for that matter.). Way too much noice reduction. |

I think Game of Death could've been his best movie. The scenes Bruce did film are all great. A shame they basically had to piece together a movie with a look alike and even had to use a cardboard cut out to make an entire film.

well they didn't have to do that at all. that was just lazy film making. with a better plot device they could have used most of the bruce footage and just rehired a couple of the actors to film new scenes. having a plot where Bruce was in "disguise" untill the end would have worked fine.

A simple Warrior's Journey approach - documentary followed by remaining footage - would have sufficed.
Wouldn't have been as fun, mind you! |

I dunno, I find the surving GOD footage to be more clever than exciting. Fist of Fury has more drama and raw emotion, which makes it the superior film.

i don't know about that. Bruce's Last Movie has way more advertising appeal than a documentary. aside from that within months of Bruce's death Bruceploitation films purporting to be Game Of Death were coming out and making money. i think Golden Harvest decided to cash in as well after they saw the huge market for these films.

I hope we get a decent high definition scan of the original Game Of Death footage!
Pretty sure the Artport version was released to cinemas in Japan at the turn of the century so it definitely exists on 35mm. |

I think Mike told me that it came down to some issue with the audio formatting when prepping to send them to Shout, I can't remember the specifics... As for mine, I just used a lavalier on a light stand and hoped for the best, lol.
