Man, New Jersey's numbers are exploding. They might be increasing at a faster rate than NYC, with roughly the same population, and nowhere near the density of us.

try watching the video before making snarky comments. he doesnt say it was manmade... just that a pendemic will be used as an excuse to push their agenda...basically creating fear out of the situation which are out of perspective to the pandemic itself

to put it in perspective, the 2009 h1n1 pandemic killed 151,700 - 575,400 people globally. why there isnt a concrete number, i dont know.

corona to date has killed 44,264 globally.

im not downplaying corona compared to h1n1, we've gone over that in this thread already. the point is that the amount of fear and panic being spread by news outlets is NOWHERE near what we saw in 2009. 61 MILLION people were infected in the USA alone over the course of a year. amount that to social media, sure, but its still WAY out of proportion. so i personally ask, why? are there ulterior motives at hand? would it be that far fetched to believe so? if your putting your trust in WHO, then id say to research the organization and come to your own conclusions.

What's really alarming is the rising death rate. Now at 2.2% in the U.S. and rising (it had dropped to as low as 1.2%). I hope it doesn't rise into the upper single digits like many of the EU countries.

its so skewed though since most places arent even testing you unless you need hospitalization. so the number will look glaringly high in proportion

Yup, and data shows that these Asian countries with masks have a much lower infection rate.

Also, now the US might consider it's stance... of course, we're late again.

Can't believe we have a lot of dumb people in our country's leadership who can't even use common sense from our President to the Surgeon General, running our country to the ground.

Because . . . then ALL non-essential stores would be closed to in-store purchases. Despite what many think a lot of people do not shop online because they don't want to. Nor do they want a stranger handling their merchandise as would happen on a curbside P/U. How are you going to handle clothing which many people try on in the store to make sure what they are buying fits?

If they didn't want big box stores in their communities, they should have prevented them from coming in. Happens all the time all over the US.

So they were testing more a few weeks ago? I was referring to it in relative terms, not absolute.

That's the case now in California. We have a statewide shelter-in-place. All non-essential business defined in the order are closed. I wasn't referring to places where non-essential businesses can remain open.

1. Absolutely no one that I know believes the WHO is believable in the slightest.
2. A follow-up study done in September 2010 showed that the risk of serious illness resulting from the 2009 H1N1 flu was no higher than that of the yearly seasonal flu.
3. How are news outlets spreading "fear and panic"? If anything, they have underplayed the danger for the most part. The most alarming things they have had to say are merely relaying the projections made by the world's foremost expects; also, they have reported accurately on what is going on in places like Italy and Spain, and most recently, NYC.

This pandemic is completely unlike anything we've seen in almost 100 years because there simply hasn't been anything this deadly in our lifetimes that hit us by surprise and that we didn't have vaccines for. It spreads like wildfire, and while one could cold-heartedly argue that the mortality rate for those infected is somewhat "low", it is nonetheless enough to completely overwhelm the capacity of the healthcare systems in most of the developed world. Needless to say, developing countries are going to be in far worse shape.

Once healthcare systems are overwhelmed, you can't get treated for any other non-Covid medical emergency that might be life-threatening.

And we still haven't even gotten through the worst of it yet.

On top of it all, the measures that are absolutely necessary to slow the spread of the contagion are going to leave millions unemployed, and possibly lead to thousands of bankruptcies for any businesses that don't get bailed out.

When all is said and done, the pandemic will have cost probably millions of lives and trillions and trillions in damages, and you think the media has overplayed the situation?

I found out how to look up cases in NYC by zip code. What's crazy is the highest number of cases is in..Corona, Queens (11368). What are the odds of that?!

If someone has written that in a disaster movie, we'd immediately say it's completely far-fetched.

As they say . . . timing is everything. The reason why the H1N1 pandemic did not get the media's attention here at least in the US was two fold; first it only killed 12,469 people. Second and most important, the media was consumed with The Great Recession which was in full swing at the same time the H1N1 pandemic hit.

Keep in mind that the numbers for H1N1 were tallied over a 12 month period. We are only into 2 months for COVID-19

Um, how about putting yellow tape blocking aisles or other barriers? It's not hard. Even removing non-essential items to temporary warehouse storage, to make room for more essential items, so that more people shopping for essentials can be allowed in the store as the stuff is spread out more, would be a good idea. Especially if this plays out for another two months or more.
