It's the last UHD I'm waiting on, though I won't get to it immediately anyway as I'm going to review them in Saga order. Yes, that means Phantom Menace first

Oh I want them all, except maybe Solo. From what I can tell the boxed set is no longer available though, and I'd like something a little more shelf friendly. 10 individual discs would take up quite a bit of shelf width, so would the boxed set.

Store the box on its side and you get a cool retro STAR WARS logo facing outwards and it takes up about 2 inches. (width wise)You'll need a heck of a tall shelf tho.

So you must keep the cardboard slip "wrapped around" the box? I do not.... although I do have that cardboard stashed away in case I ever change my mind.

Just been watching the new Disney gallery on Disney +, Mandalorian Directors roundtable effectively, but they keep showing unaltered high resolution clips of the original trilogy.

Death Star explosion without wave effect - check
Darth Vader picking up the Emperor without the ‘no, noooooooo’ - check

Kathleen Kennedy is a part of the program too, this would have gone through quality control surely, they changed empire of dreams to the updated versions. Maybe a hint to what is to come, Disney will not be able to go back to the physical well again after this release, unless they give everyone something they always wanted. Unaltered editions 4K. With the $17 billion debt they just took on, every little helps

Interesting, particularly as the discussion is all about how the original changed lives.

Also Dave Filoni talking about the duel of the fates scene makes you look at it in a totally different way now and the impact that one fight had on the entire saga.

No they don't. They keep showing clips of the 2011 SE masters EXCEPT for that one Death Star shot, which itself is clearly from some grotty old low-rez transfer and not exactly a smoking gun that the originals are ready and waiting. Even the "Nooooooo" shot is from the 2011, you just can't hear Vader on it because people are talking over the clip. And note that Vader had no eyebrows in that unmasked shot from ROTJ, I know you didn't mention that one but it's proof that these are the SE masters. And not even the newer transfers.

The OG Death Star was a fun Easter egg but that's all it is.

When Disney took over Fox it was actually $19.2 billion of debt, but they also acquired $19.8 billion of cash at the time. The transaction details were posted on their own website.

I will cede to your better judgement, but why leave the death star explosion in?

You have to admit though it is the only physical release they have left.

They have had to go to the markets again after the $6 billion they raised already when they shut the parks, another $11 billion on top......ouch

Still a couple of Marvel films will pay off a good chunk of that

You're absolutely right about the OG Death Star, they didn't leave it in by accident. I can imagine all the clickbait websites getting themselves in a tizzy over it and assuming that everything else they're seeing is from the UOT. But as 99% of the OT clips seen so far are basically from the existing Blu-rays (mostly shots without any SE enhancements to begin with) then I'm not sure it's anything more than an Easter egg, timed as you say to match the reminiscences of the 'what was your first Star Wars?' discussion rather than being put there for no apparent reason.

Saw a TV special about Garry Marshall last night that oddly used a bunch of STAR WARS footage to introduce the "Mork & Mindy" segment. It was NOT cleaned up; in fact it was 4:3 and clearly from an old ratty trailer... but fascinating that they seemed to have gone out of their way to string together a bunch of non-Special-Edition dogfight footage from the end Death Star battle. Like they were making a statement. I'm sure I'm reading too much into it, but I dug it.

It may be the first step into a larger world for the UOT, that they're easing the idea of it back into the public consciousness as no normal person actually gives a shit. (I said it before that the SE has now spent longer as the 'default' version of Star Wars than the original did!) And then there was some other documentary a little while back that used footage from the Despecialised editions, of all things.

I don't think it means that the UOT films are ready and waiting, as they're not. (I'm pretty sure that these 2012 4K versions are what your industry buddy was referring to when he told you he'd seen a new transfer of Star Wars, remember that?) But there's definitely a conscious intent from the people making this stuff, most likely older SW fans, in acknowledging that there were these OG versions that Lucas had previously airbrushed from history. And as he's not in charge any more then those reins have been loosened just a tad; Lucas's overriding wishes are still guiding the horse to be sure, but it's going on a few more detours of late.

Agreed 100%. And re: the bolded passage in your quote above -- absolutely, these are the transfers my buddy told me about. No doubt at all. He even specifically said it was NOT going to be the original editions, however many years ago that was. These have been a lonnnng time coming, and I don't think we'll be getting anything else soon -- which is reason numero uno I've embraced them enthusiastically for at least being BETTER than what we had before.

Crazy things in the world of home cinema has happened... there have been releases that we never thought would have happened, so I'd never say 'never' in regards to seeing the UOT on disc, or at least on Disney +, but I sincerely doubt it'll happen. In fact, I think the point you've made about the special editions being around as the 'definitive' versions longer than the UOT means we'll be less and less likely to see the UOT as time goes on. The generations of filmgoers behind us will really only know of the special editions, and if they're okay with what they're watching (because it's all they've ever known), then Disney will likely keep Lucas' preference to not release the UOT in line.

I hope that's not the case, though. Like many other films, I want the option to watch either version in my home theater. Make it so, Disney.

And now... with the caveat that I genuinely enjoy all eleven live action STAR WARS feature films, and with the acknowledgement that I do indeed have wayyyy too much time on my hands, I present this graph -- in Saga order left to right, and favorite-to-least-favorite top to bottom. It maps my experience viewing the Saga and my "relative" enjoyment of each movie.

..............................IV.................. ............
....................................V............. ............
.................................................. .VIII.......
........................RO........................ ...........
..............................................VII. ............
........................................VI........ ............
....II............................................ .............
...............SOLO............................... ..........
I................................................. .............
.........III...................................... .............
.................................................. ......... IX

EDIT: And just in case the formatting gets wiggy on different browsers/devices, here's a photo of the crazy graph...

I wonder if younger generations would embrace the UOT or reject it as different (read: inferior) from the SEs they've grown up with?
